We are paying lots of money to plex and end up with corrupt databases and the possibility of losing years of watch histories.
So, yes there should be an option for Plex Pass subscribers to have a cloud based watch history, so that you never have to worry about losing your watch history, because that is the most important aspect of the library.
At the least there should be an option for a cloud based watch history backup, maybe weekly?
The lack of this feature makes it really hard to recommend plex to other people.
I will add that sometimes people will want to just start a fresh library because of corruptions and other reasons.
With a cloud based watch history, the only thing you would need to worry about is losing the metadata, which isn’t that big of a deal if you’re using metadata from online sources.
This needs to happen PLEX! I hope you’re listening!
+1 on this!
I tried searching before creating my own request but unfortunately I didn’t find this. It also didn’t come up in the right hand side while writing the request. Sorry 'bout that @tom80H
This is what I wrote:
Greetings!
Wouldn’t managing viewing history and such be so much easier if Plex had a cloud service that stored all users history etc? Encrypted off course.
As the new Plex metadata agents is now fully rolled out, implementing this for at least Plex Pass users against these databases should be possible. It would be so great to be able to just open any new library and as long as you’re logged in with your user all your past history is immediately synced.
It happens. Good for you that your database hasn’t become corrupt yet but that doesn’t mean it’s bullet proof.
Trakt.tv will sync your PLEX playcounts to Trakt but not from Trakt to Plex if you need to reset your database and start from scratch, I have looked into that as a solution and I’m not paying for a subscription when it won’t even do what I need it to do.
Cloud backups are reliable and PLEX should get on this.
I think my corruption happened when my machine shut down unexpectedly during a power outage while it was backing up,
There needs to be some kind of solution for this without risking losing all of the years of work we have put into our media libraries.
In the meantime, Plex have implemented an option to sync watch state / ratings. This will only track if an item has been watched, not the entire watch history/progress. Similarly, the sync won’t reflect the source (e.g. your own library, some shared library, Plex’ online media services…).
