Collection order -> Random

Would be nice to have a new way to order our collections. As of now we could only go with “alphabetical” or “release date”.

Having a “random” option and pairing this with showing the collections on the suggestions tab would give a much more netflix-esque experience to browse your library.

There’s already a suggestion to provide a random order for the library view. This would also apply to smart collections (based on advanced filter → Save As > Start Collection).

Not sure if you’re planning to use those smart collections on your home screen or if this is more of a general feature you want for all collections.

Its kind of the same thing, but I was aiming towards the collection order itself, not the whole library.

But yeah, pretty similar.

I just started messing with the collections on home screen and they look awesome. But since I tend to have large collections, it gets kind of stale that you get always the same order. A random order would fit this feature much better imo.

As a general Feature is what I had thought would be possible to add in the dropdown menu. instead of a advance filter set. Perhaps as one would log in the web gui or thru an end point device it would randomly cycle thru and randomize the movies every session.

I’d like a couple of sort buttons added as well or drop down menu for the collection. I don’t care if it is an option for genre or the entire collection - nothing wrong with having it there but I use collections as they more accurately reflect what type of movie I’m searching for as I think of them.

Let’s stick with the guidelines for the feature suggestion category and stay with 1 suggestion per thread – otherwise users will not be able to vote for a particular suggestion.

+1 to random sorting

you can do this now with a workaround detailed here

I just tried that hack. It works when you open the collection from the library collections tab, but if you publish it to the library recommended page, or the home page, the order is randomized once, and maintains that order in the web app (didn’t try any other apps). I tried a refresh of the page, and even logging out and back in, and the order remained the same.

It’s a workaround, but hopefully Plex gives us a random order. I’d like to vote for this, but I can’t decide what other suggestion I have voted for to abandon to gain back a vote.

same here, the hack doesn‘t work when making the collection visible in Home or Library

Im seeing the order change randomly on the home screen although like you said i cant figure out how to force the random to refresh but if you leave it long enough it should refresh at some point or at least mine did

yup. Noticed today the order had changed. Good enough for me if even if it’s a once a day thing. If the simple hack works, it can’t be a big leap to make it an actual option, can it?

one would hope haha

With the recent update I noticed they added ability to sort library by random. Maybe we’re getting closer to random collections also?

You can make a Smart Collection out of the random library sort with a filter as well. You can then add that as a home screen or library recommended row. I have not heard of any plans to make a random order for “dumb” collections though at this time.

I actually just did this yesterday - when ‘By Random’ came to the Public Release.

I have The Smart Collection set to display 40 Random Movies, After 2018. Every page load is a different selection - in fact, if you add a movie while the page is open - a new list appears… it don’t mess around…:

It’s actually very nice and even works faster than ‘Start Watching’ for TV Shows (right above Recently Added Movies in the image above).

I stuck it on the Movie Page - right at the front:

Now the question:
Do my shared users see my Unwatched Movies, or Theirs?
I haven’t had an opportunity to ask them…yet.

I guess that since the smart collection is managed by the filters on your user, all others users will have the same content as you.

Yeah, I’ll start messing around with them. The thing is that I already have like 20~30 ‘dumb’ collections.

What I managed to do is create a new smart collection with a single filter (‘collection is = xxx’). It does work, but I’ll be having duplicates for all of my old collections, and having to set everything again (poster, description…):

2021 clean-up: implemented (smart collections can use the random library order; regular collections can use custom order; all collections can now be pinned to the recommended tab / home screen).
