Collections Visibility Bug

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: 9.0.34.10854

I’m having a consistent problem across multiple Roku devices where various Collections bug out and become impossible to see/navigate properly.

Background: this server has several collections, roughly organized into genres - Action, Horror, Science Fiction, etc. These collections are named the same thing between movies, TV, and anime libraries (i.e., Movies has a “Fantasy” Collection and so does Television) and this does cause some slightly weird stuff to happen due to Plex linking them (like them sharing uploaded posters), but overall is not an issue. Collections in a given library range in size from around sixty for the smallest to over a thousand for the largest.

When using the Plex webapp or desktop Windows app, I get what I assume is the normal behavior - you navigate to the Collection, and if you scroll down to the bottom of it past the last items, it gives you some ribbons with other options - here are the TV shows that are also in a Collection called Comedy, for example - to choose from. This is fine.

On the Roku app, however, these additional “other libraries’ materials in this collection” footers keep randomly shooting up to the top while navigating, making it impossible to see around them - there will be a sliver of the collection I’m trying to navigate, but 90% of the screen is taken up with the “see also anime that is labeled Horror” (or whatever) carousels. There is no apparent way to minimize or remove these; hitting the back button on the remote will cause them to disappear, but will also always cause the Collection to default back to the items at the very top, which as you can imagine from the numbers above makes it basically impossible to get access to anything halfway or later on the list for all but the smallest of the Collections.

I assume this is some sort of bug related to how Plex on Roku handles large collections of things - something about it checking for “end of list” BEFORE loading the next set of movies as you scroll down, maybe, or there being secret pagination that isn’t loading in the right order? I have no idea, but it’s making my Collections unusable outside of the webapp. (There is no noticeable long lag involved - maybe a second to load the next set of posters at most.)

For me, Collections on Roku have had a consistent, 100% repeatable, and significant bug for months now… since this new UX was released. I tested it again today and I see that it has still not been addressed. There are several threads on the general distaste for the new UX (myself included), so I won’t get into that here.

Size of the Collection does not seem to matter, as I have smaller Collections (20 or so) that do the same thing. To duplicate the issue, simply navigate to any Collection (Movies and TV Shows Collections behave the same way). Select an item in the Collection to view its details. Then, simply use the Back button to navigate back to the list of all items in the Collection. That’s all that is required to duplicate the issue, which makes one wonder how this bug got past even the most rudimentary of testing (presuming this bug is not unique to me, of course, though it is present on all Roku devices for me) and how it has remained an issue for months now.

Upon navigating back to the list, the view of the list will then be compromised in some way. Most often, scrolling down or up will blank half (or more) of the screen and you will not be able to see the remainder of the list… or tell which item you have selected. Fixing it requires backing all the way out to the list of Collections and then selecting the Collection again, upon which the display will be normal (until any specific item is viewed again, at which time the “bug” repeats itself).

I’m not sure what this part means.
