Collections with the same name not working as documented

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173
Player Version#: Plex Web 4.69.1, Plex for Windows 1.37.0.2706-5b2cfe50, Plex for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV 7.25

I was originally going to post this in the Plex Player section, but since this is not working properly on 4 different players, I believe this is a server issue.
I will admit that I just found out about giving collections the same name across different libraries, as mentioned in the Collections support article. Specifically:

The collections details page contains all the items in that library that belong to the collection. It can also include items from other libraries that are in a collection with the exact same name. By adding items in different libraries to identically-named collections, you can relate them to each other. For instance, you can have Star Wars movies, TV shows, and music albums all in a “Star Wars” collection so they’re related to each other.

I have an established Halloween collection in my movies library, so I created additional collections with the same name in my TV and Music libraries. Here are the results when I the collection from the 3 different libraries:

  • Halloween Movies collection, all players listed - Only the movies collection is displayed.
  • Halloween TV collection, Apple TV player only - Only the TV collection is displayed.
  • Halloween TV collection, all other listed Players - The Movies collection is additionally displayed, but not the Music collection.
  • Halloween Music collection, Apple TV player only - Only the Music collection is displayed.
  • Halloween Music collection, all other listed Players - The Movies collection is additionally displayed, but not the TV collection.

Unless I’m doing this incorrectly (and I don’t think that’s the case), this feature is broken. I also want to comment that I think this feature could work better if there was a separate Collections section available on the side bar, maybe just below search. If there was a Collections section, then you could browse all the collections for the different libraries, and then the “unified” collections potentially could appear at the top. But let’s start with baby steps and fix the issue to match the functionality as document first, please!

I have a couple collections that include movies, music, and TV. They all show consistently across Plex Web, Plex for Windows, AndroidTV, Android Mobile, and Roku (I don’t have any Apple devices).

Make sure the Collection tag in each item is consistent (not “Halloween” in some and “Halloween Collection” in others). If your collection name is “Halloween Collection,” make sure there’s only one space between words.

Are you accessing the libraries in the same way in each case? If you open the collection via the Collections tab at the top of the library, it should show matching items from all libraries.

If you use the Collection Filter, you will only get Collection items from the current library:

I realize that none of these seem likely to account for what you’re seeing. I just want to cover all bases.

You mentioned the Collection “tag”, but I don’t think such a thing exists. I assume you are just referring to the Collection name, and in that case for my example yes, the collection name is just “Halloween” for the Movies, TV, and Music libraries.

And the only way I have been viewing these collections is by browsing the Movies, TV, or Music libraries, then navigating to the Collections section, and then selecting the collection. I was not filtering from a library. So I believe I am configuring and viewing these collections as intended, but the results are not correct.

I’m referring to this, but I think we’re talking about the same thing:

Anyway, I don’t know what might be causing the issue you’re seeing. Hopefully someone will have more. Good luck.

OK, I see what you are referring to. If I review one of the Movies in that collection, yes within the Tags section, those movies are all in the Halloween collection. What’s interesting is when I edit a TV show episode or music track in the same named collection, collections don’t exist. Specifically for TV episodes and music tracks, there is a Tag section but the Collections area does not exist.

I was about to say you can only add entire shows, artists, or albums to a collection, not seasons, episodes, or tracks. But that’s not correct, they just haven’t added that field to the Edit dialogs. The ‘Add to Collection’ item in the dropdown menu is a relatively recent addition. I haven’t used it, and I forget it’s there.

I just added two music tracks to my ‘Robert Langdon Collection,’ and they showed up in the collection along with the albums and movies when I opened the collection from the Music library. When I opened the collection from the Movie library, the tracks aren’t there.

So it looks like the limitation might be related to adding tracks and/or episodes to the collection, rather than the complete show or album.

I think you found the issue. So previously I added some TV episodes to a collection called Halloween. Now when I right-clicked on a TV show to add it to a Collection, there was no Halloween Collection listed, but I was able to create a Collection called Halloween. Now I have 2 collection in my TV library called Halloween. Then I did something similar in my Music library by adding an artist to a new Collection called Halloween, and now I have 2 Collections in my Music library called Halloween. Now when I view the collections they display other collections, but the only collections that work are:

  • Collections with movies from Movie libraries
  • Collections with TV shows from TV libraries
  • Collections with artists or albums from Music libraries

And now that I re-read that “Collections Details Page” from the Collections Support Article, TV shows and Music albums are mentioned as additionally working when collections are named the same. But I guess my examples in other libraries, TV episodes and individual Music tracks, are not supported, or were just never configured to work with this.

I would like to point out that, even though Collections across libraries may not work exactly the way I would want, it does kinda work
except for the Apple TV client. I have multiple sets of collections across TV and Movie libraries, and wherever I view those collections, it does not show any other linked collections on the Apple TV client. This is why I’ve moved the topic over to Plex Players. Hopefully the devs or someone else will see this and respond.

I noticed this as well. It connects collections of the same name; TV Shows and Movies for example but it does not work on the Apple TV client. Works fine on my Mac and iOS devices. I’m pretty sure it did work on Apple TV before the last update. It’s frustrating because I use the Apple TV as my primary viewing platform, not my iPhone or Mac. The Apple TV is also what helps my spouse enjoy the Plex library and having the collections link does help greatly for navigation for her. Hopefully Plex devs are aware of the issue and have it in queue for a fix.

Happy Holidays! I was hoping for a fix for this as a Christmas gift, but no luck so far, Has anyone any suggestions on how to re-enable the connection between collections on the Apple TV client? I am up to date on all versions and the collections connection works fine on the web client, jut not on Apple TV. In the past I’ve occasionally seen Mr. Elan Feingold himself chime in on technical issues. Are there any other Plex experts that can share some insight on this? Thank you!

This used to work on the Apple TV client but hasn’t for the past 4 months or so. Very annoying.

Yes, it’s also my primary platform and I have previously used it to identify movies that I have on disc only (by using dummy entries in a separate library). My collections used to be more complete that way, but no more.

Yes, exactly. Has anyone heard of a fix for this yet? I waived the latest server upgrade this week, because I want to se if it’s fixed BEFORE risking blowing up my collection with an update. Sorry, but it has happened before with other updates.

Still working for me
what type of collections are you missing? Are those by chance smart collections?

Okay, that’s interesting. Just to be sure we are talking about the same thing

  • It’s not that Collections themselves are missing - it’s just that when viewing a collection (on Apple TV) you no longer see listed items from collections with the same name in other libraries.
As the OP points out, it used to be possible to have collections with the same name in, say, Movies, TV and Music libraries and still see them all listed together when viewing any of the collections. But no more.
  • This still works for me on MacOS but NOT on Apple TV.
  • It did work correctly up to a few months ago.

(my first response to this seems to have disappeared?)

I was going to comment as well, but @Johdal you covered it well. What is still not working is viewing Collections with the same name across different libraries, on an Apple TV. I could get into the nuances of what specifically works and doesn’t work even if I’m just viewing via the web interface (because that’s honestly a different post in general), but even if I did exactly what was supported for Collections across libraries, it’s not working on any of my Apple TVs with the Plex app.

So your point is you’re not seeing same-named related collections when opening the actual collection? That I cannot see too.

I do however see all related collections of a movie when watching the movie details on the Apple TV.

Yes, correct, that is the issue.

Re your second point, I had not noticed this - will check if I’m seeing the same, thanks.

Yes, I’ve just checked that - I’m seeing the same - collections with the same name from other libraries are still shown within the movie details for a film in a collection. So I suppose the feature is still working in a very limited (and practically useless) way!

Confirmed. They are only collections named exactly the same for other libraries (Mel Brooks, for movies, Mel Brooks for TV Shows). No connections between collections are visible in the Apple TV app, but works for on my Mac.
