I currently have servers running on two separate computers and am looking to consolidate them onto a single machine. Moving the files is a trivial process, but I did a lot of manual metadata editing on both that I’d rather not do again (anyone that has tried adding Animaniacs to their library knows what I’m talking about). I don’t necessarily care about watch status or rating, mostly just posters and episode title/descriptions.
My current structure is:
Server 1 (M2 Mac Mini)
-Anime
-Anime Movies
Server 2 (Intel Mac Mini)
-TV
-Movies
-Music
I want to take all of those libraries as they currently exist, but all live on a single new Server 3 (another M2 Mac Mini). I’m familiar with the process of migrating an entire server, but I’ve never tried to combine them without starting from scratch. Is this possible?
As long as your file and folder naming convention is good, and generally conforms to what Plex expects, it is likely that the vast majority of the items will be rediscovered on the new server perfectly OK.
On the basis that the above point is true, it might well be that you would only need to be concerned with a few specific items that might have historically been tricky to get Plex to recognize and pull appropriate posters etc… With this in mind, consider placing inline posters on those tricky items to ensure you get the posters you want.
If you have the storage space to accommodate, I would COPY content from old server to new, rather than MOVE. This way, the original server is always left entirely intact whilst you gradually build up the new server.
Take VERY regular backups of the databases so you can restore back a few steps if needed.
Take you time with this, and only work on it when you have the time and brain space… If you are tired or pissed off, leave it to another day… I am gradually migrating my separate 4K libraries into the main libraries, and have resigned myself to the fact that this is going to take me weeks, if not months to finish.
