I have a Synology DS218+. I was having trouble with playback of live TV from Plex using my HDHomeRun EXTEND, both via a web browser and on my Roku. It kept pausing/buffering.
Instead of upgrading both RAM modules, I got someone’s unneeded 2GB module off of eBay and installed it (so now I have 4GB total). Since they are the same size, this means I’m now running in dual-channel mode. I have no more problems with live TV.
Would you mind sharing the exact 2GB module? How drastic is the difference? I installed 8GB for a total of 10GB in my DS218+ but still have trouble with tv streams at 1080i (mostly live sports).
For comparison using Tautulli, I was getting around 0.6x speed for the football game last night but normal 720p tv shows I get around 2x.
Stuttering of LiveTV is not a function of RAM as much as it’s a function of CPU power.
When the speed is showing you 0.6x , this means the CPU is only processing at 60% of realtime demand. All the memory in the world cannot help with this. Having mismatched memory will make it worse. In all situations with CPUs, regardless the application, identical sized, same vendor & speed is what you want.
In the case of this additional 8GB module, it might actually be slowing down the processing speed. If the speed of the memory is slower than factory spec, it will slow the entire NAS down to match the max speed of the slowest component.
Thanks for the advice. My 8GB stick does match the speed of the of the factory stick, but I’ll remove it and compare the results. As advertised, the CPU should have no trouble transcoding 1080i live tv, should it? What would you recommend to help remedy this?
These CPUs support Dual Channel memory mode. This occurs with both DIMMS are the same capacity and speed specs. The result is a 10-15% memory performance improvement because the controller can read and write concurrently as well as 2x the data per operation and utilize the otherwise idle clock cycles of normal memory timing.
for transcoding + PMS operation, we find 8GB is a pretty sweet position to be in. (2x 4GB)
4GB is ok provided you aren’t going to "push " too hard with multiple concurrent streams or attempting to import while streaming. Things like this.
If it came with 2GB from Synology, adding their 2GB matching memory module would be best choice in that case.
Going 3rd party. i use kingston with my DS1815+ (intel), is ok provided you verify the specs of what you’re buying are compatible with the CPU’s memory controller timing.
In my DS1815+, the one module is behind HD bay 1 while the other is on the CPU side of that same motherboard… In the DS918 & DS718+ both are side by side up at the top right of the enclosure next to drive 4. It’s always ‘fun’
If you unclip each side gently, it’s not bad. There are countess you-tube videos. you might find the exact one for your NAS
