Comments on: Plex Roku Preview: A Faster, Simpler Navigation Experience

So just accept it, right? No. The UI as it stands now is horrible. There is no getting used to it. I pay monthly, so I don’t have to just get used to it. I am moving on if this is permanent. I don’t care if all the streamers have moved to horizontal menus… I don’t use them for a reason. I have my own plex server for a reason.

And since they have gone horizontal Plex has to? That makes no sense. Be a pioneer, not a follower.

Seems permanent as the New Improved UI is now released.

not going to complain about the UI. shot yourself in the foot and there’s nothing that can be done about it.

but… tested roku prevue, then the app is released. somehow its slower than everything before.

EDIT: They absolutely have it show the server name if you favorite a library from a remote server (or have a mix of libraries from multiple servers, really don’t know for sure what the perimeter is exactly). Point is, it’s not a problem whatsoever. I’ll keep this original post here below in case anyone else is wondering.

If someone favorites a library on a remote server, does it show the server name in this new drop down library menu? This was missing from the first “new plex experience” roku app, which created confusion for the inevitable “tv shows” library having the same name on multiple servers… meaning you couldn’t tell which was from which server. I know they added it in later, but what about with this new design? I haven’t had a chance to test it myself on my roku yet, but it kinda looks like their isn’t space for it in the pics I’ve seen so far.

I hope it’s not an issue, as this creates a huge opportunity for confusion, especially with the less tech savvy users like my Mom and Dad. THINK OF THE MOMS AND DADS PEOPLE!!

If I find it’s not an issue after my own testing, I will come back and remove or update this post.

I prefer the left sidebar menu as well, as do my other users on my servers… but they clearly don’t seem to want to change it back yet. So let’s just try to be constructive. I haven’t had any game breaking issues on the new app (roku only, haven’t used the new app on mobile so far) and the UI, while not my fav, is usable and I have mostly not really thought about it much in awhile.

Don’t think I am some shill or anything. Look at my post history. I was very, very concerned about this redesign and posted about my feelings a lot before and after I used it. Especially before, as what I was reading was really concerning and worrying me.

All that said, let’s just try and work towards a better outcome for us all, which I believe we can do without compromising ourselves.

I have an Apple TV in addition to a Roku, and I use the Roku mostly because the Apple TV Plex App doesn’t handle captions on Replay like most Apple TV Apps (.vut does on Roku). But I use the Apple TV Plex App enough that I find the new UI easier to navigate. This wasn’t immediate, but given time, I got used to it and like it.

Not sure why Plex can’t do caption on replay on Apple TV,.

This isn’t the 80’s where the elderly’s DVR’s had a flashing clock because they couldn’t program a VCR. Since the late 90’s and the internet the elderly are tech savvy. (I consider myself elderly and get annoyed at the GenZ’s who don’t think we can handle a computer – I have news for you, we’re the ones that built it)

…and I realize you were joking with the  We’re also the ones who started that with ‘:-)’

I hate that you’ve made Playlists (the un-nested one) now at the bottom of the libraries list. It means at least 15 unnecessary button presses to get to the actual real Playlist library every time (I have a lot of different libraries). Can’t you either place it at the top of the list or at least allow us to reorder the list?

Well, as of yesterday we have vertical dropdown sub menus from the center top (Home, Libraries, Live TV), and my libraries almost fit on the screen now. Much improved over the left/right Libraries submenu. Playlists and Collection sub-sub menu is immediately showing up to the right when hovering over a library is an improvement, but still a ridiculous number of clicks to get to the Playlists! Library ReScan option is now automatically visible rather than being hidden in the * menu off the library. Its a step forward at least, but I still dont understand the obsession over the ridiculous center menuing…

At this point, its somewhat more intuitive, but you guys still have some catching up to do with your own old UI… lol

Update: It appears the large collection viewing bug is now worse. Now almost all my screen disappears if I move in and out of details of a collection entry a few times while scrolling through the collection. Started with half the screen blanked, then most of the screen blanked.. The blank then moves up the screen until the ENTIRE screen is gone and you only see background fading.. WTF?! Now even more broken! Hitting back button resets the collection view, but now at the top of the collection.

Mine has been like this since the bug showed up. It isn’t worse and thankfully Plex is aware of the issue and it will probably be fixed soon.

So, let’s make the Roku Plex app to be like it has a touch screen and not a remote control to navigate all the menus. It takes too long just to find the browse button, just for you to miss click and it go where you do not want to go. Please bring back the way it looks on a PC web Browser and not the touch screen version. Oh wait, we been saying this for months now and its falling on deaf ears because someone’s feelings will get hurt because WE DO NOT LIKE WHERE THIS IS HEADING

The old Roku UI had horizontal and vertical menus too.

You don’t need to click on “Browse” to browse, just click on the Library name, just like you used to in the old UI (make sure you set Browse as your default view, just as you had to do in the old UI).

I (we) do.

I agree. It’s a practical problem with the new UI. As others have pointed out, there’s no ability to go to the top menu directly. Which means that long vertical lists of assets must be scrolled through to get there. On a touch screen that’s fine but with a remote navigation, it’s costly in time and leads to frustration. It’s also more clicks away to drill down through the menus. For individuals with physical disabilities, this is another hurdle that they have to jump through to get to their destination. This is especially troublesome with eye motion trackers, which depending on their type, may have to scroll up by each line individually.

i just wanna put in a bit of a quote from my 8 yr old kid because i havent looked at plex for the past week or so…. and i found it kinda funny.

From across the room and i guess he has been playing with the tv roku with the non plex preview the quote was said in one of those whiny kid uhhg tones when they hate things

“daaaad they got rid of that stupid top menu. but they added a top menu list. uhhhhhhhhg its still stupid and bad. can we please have the old menu back this one still sucks and is stupid.”

i told him “its one step forward to maybe fixing it to the way it was before this change at the beginning of school” and he retorted with “still 40 steps back from the one we had since i was (insert 3yr old’s name). i want the old one back this sucks.”

straight from the kids mouth. thought you all would get a good laugh..

That may be easily fixed by Plex by having a double-click of the Back Button to go directly to the Top Menu.

This is the current behavior. Scroll down into any page view then selecting Back will bring you back to the top of the list. Back again should bring focus to the top menu.

Roku is also unique in that you can also use the RWD/FF buttons to quickly skip through lists of items or options.

@Atomatth, I might not be doing it correctly.
Here’s an example.

  1. On Home
  2. Back once brings me to Top Menu
  3. Right, Libraries, Down to TV Shows, Enter
  4. Scroll to select a Show, then select a Season
  5. Back once brings me back to Season, Back again to that Show, Back again TV Shows List, Back again to Top of Show List, Back again to Libraries, Then Back Again to Top Menu

I was thinking that at any point that a double-back could bring me back to the Top Menu might be something to consider implementing (if possible)

Nope it was me assuming the page/path. I was referring to Library or Source pages. Like a Library’s browse or Home. Sounds like you’d like to quickly escape out of a nested detail page (Show > Season). Thanks for clarifying.
