I wonder… has anyone attempted to copy “Plex Commerical Skipper.exe” from PMS 1.18.5.2309 and used it to replace the one that comes with PMS 1.19.4.2902? It seems pretty clear from the logs above that the issue is not related to starting the commerical skip process, but that while running, “Plex Commercial Skipper.exe” is crashing (from a Microsoft Visual C library). Maybe the old skipper will work with the latest PMS. Might be worth trying since the old skipper works with the old PMS.

I’ve tried a similar approach in the past - I had a longstanding issue with Plex Commercial Skipper prior to this bug - I solved it by copying the donator version of comskip.exe into the PMS directory as plex commercial skipper. That stopped working as of 1.18.6.

As best as I can tell, it’s not that PCS isn’t being invoked, it’s that the EDL it generates isn’t being acted upon.

I can now answer my own question because I just tried it. It does not help. In fact, it crashes with the same error. The size of both the old and new files are the same, so I’m not sure if anything has changed in that particular program.

In Windows, you can look at details to see build number, etc. Are they the same?

No fix for me on Windows 10. Today’s PMS mentioned Commercial Skipper.exe, but I just recorded two 30 min shows, both came to 29 minutes. No love yet. Let me know if you want any logs again.

Upgraded to PMS 1.19.4.2935. System is Windows 10 with Intel Xeon E3 1245 CPU, C236 chipset, 32 GB (4x8GB) ECC unbuffered memory, Intel HD Graphics P530 (on CPU) plus Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. Restarted PMS, recorded show and in the Advanced options checked the option to remove commercials. It did not remove commercials. Windows event viewer shows the same message as before.

On PMS, the transcoder options for “Use hardware acceleration when available” and “Use hardware-accelerated video encoding” are both unchecked (disabled).

To Plex Developers, please let me know what additional information you need to replicate and resolve this issue.

I don’t know if this is relative or not, but just in case it is…
I noticed that on the system hosting PMS, if I change directory to %LocalAppData% it does NOT bring me to a location where the “Plex Media Server” directory is located.

%LocalAppData% points to C:\Users\<my_user_id>\AppData\Local and that location does not contain a “Plex Media Server” directory.

The actual location of the “Plex Media Server” directory is D:\PLEX\AppData\Local

It is correctly referenced from the following four registry keys…
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server
Computer\HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

My thought was regarding any parameters being passed to Plex Commerical Skipper…if any of the parameters contain %LocalAppData%\Plex Media Server, then it would not find anything.

Hopefully that information, or something in my previous post will help debug the issue…or at least find common configuration among the many other people reporting this exact same problem.

We never supported having an environment variable being in a defined path on the server settings - paths have always needed to be specified as actual paths

you appear to have disabled debug logging on the server

If you have issues that need to be looked into please run always with debug logging enabled and always attach the full logs zip as downloaded through plex web troubleshooting interface

Because Plex Commercial Skipper.exe crashed, the original (unmodified, with commericals) recording was used.
