Detect and Delete Commercials no longer working

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6442
Player Version#: 4.29.2 desktop but use desktop and web unless your going to say the settings have to be set through the web version only?
Tuner Make/Model: HD HomeRun with 3 tuners
Guide/Lineup name: Optimum Dutchess County
Using XMLTV?: No
Channel number/Name: Any of my channels. Seems this started since this last major release 1.30.n.n

Can you please confirm this is on this build 1.30.0.6442 as it has a fix for the Plex Commercial Skipper for a problem that was in the earlier 1.30.0 build

If it is on the latest 6442 build, please provide debug server logs and details of the issue

It is indeed 1.30.0.6442 as I noted in my original submission.
Do you want the logs after, during or? its processing a recorded show after the show ends or just send what logs I have right now point in time?
BTW it does not matter if its a typical sitcom show, movie or sporting broadcast, the commercials are still pressent on my WIN Box.

I was trying to establish if this was a regression in the recent builds and if it was a crash of the commercial skipper process

Would have these commercial been detected by the older versions of Plex Mefis Server ?

Debug server logs at The End of The skip process would indicate if there was a crash - may need the actual recording ts files if available

if you need a recording then i better stick to a 30 minute one. Yes ALL my recordings now have the full set of commericals in it still that I see when playing…i.e. a 60 minute show normally reduces to a 40 to 45 minute show while a 2hr recording usually reduces to a 1hr 30 minute show or movie once commercial shows. The recordings are over the main networks/channel including CBS/2, NBC/4, FOX/5, ABC/7, CW/11, etc…

I will send the logs after I do that 30 minute show of anything but have to figure out how to find and do that again as its been a while. Are the logs to be attached here or ? Also if it was a crash should not that checkbox in the above picture caused you to get them automatically?

On my analysis of recordings I have access to for the last weeks show recordings as of 11/6/22 that have commercials removed OK. Anything else I still have after that 22 date to view has the commercials in the recordings whether 30, 60 or 2hr programs I recorded when they should not. So the question is relative to the original 1…30.0.nnnn Beta release channel I am on and assuming I installed it fairly right away upon release, what version would have been out by that 11/6 date and then after it? So I checked and I believe the first 1.30.0.6359 I downloaded on 11/8 so the last good recording of commercials I see removed was 11/6 so it seems to me as I stated originally its been a problem since the 1.30.0.nnnn version(s) I installed.

UPDATE: Turned on logging, rebooted, recorded 2 x 20 minute programs as I normally would as record ALL of the series and NEW episodes so as to be setup the same way as I normally record the other problem series. I checked the 2 programs once done recording and yep they have commercials in the 20 minutes recording which I expected to be compressed down to 15 or less minutes after commmercial removal. I reset the logging as off and rebooted the server. I tell you this incase you see other ativity in the the logs since I downloaded them after checking by playing the 2 partial episodes.

Attached are the zip files. My server is a WIN 10 X64, PLEX Server: 1.30.0.6442
Please read above points in this post to see where I noticed it started keeping commercials based on when I downloaded the 1.30 first version and when I last had a recording that was good prior to that 11/8 download date.

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-11-28_16-28-47.zip (2.3 MB)

We can get an exact indication if you open windows event viewer and select Windows Logs / Application and then filter current log for source MsiInstaller - (for the 32-bit installs which is what you are running)

Then scroll through the filtered events and look at the dates and times of the Plex Media Server versions installs - if you can give exact build numbers / version numbers from one before 6th November and one after 8th November

Not all binaries are covered by the crash reporting. Also crash reporting does not always succeed in getting a crash report uploaded and processed at the backend system

Looking at the logs

Is there a .log file in the media recording directory ? If there is could you attach it please

Could you add this as Reg Dword 32-bit value
with value 0
DvrComskipRemoveIntermediates

Add it below
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

This will leave diagnostic files for commercial skipper in the media path for the recording

According to your scheme I had the last one before 1.30.n was released. Why would you need me to deep dive to figure that out when you should know that I would think what that last version was. I am runnin whatever 32 bit or 64 bit based on what I installed YEARS AGO at first for my platform and since upgraded with your BETA path download process. So if you are telling me it switched then you switched it not me. Are other people having this same issue or just have not recognized it yet since 1.30.n came out?

UPDATE: I believe the last version before 1.30.n.n was 1.29.2.6364 which I believe was the last fix to that 1.29.
After all this I think I will get off the BETA! It seems there is ongoing breakage of things when it should be only adding new function that may or may not work.

And do what after adding that?

Give me an exact directory location of */…/… to look in.

Regarding crash uploads it seems some of the logs indicate it had issues uploading files because of too man y crashes and logs? What is that about in Plex Crash Uploader.log?

I was not. You had the 32-bit download installed throughout. I only mentioned 32-bit because the method to search Windows Event Log for Plex Media Server installs is different and the one I outlined is only for the 32-bit version.

OK no need - Initially in 1.30.0 we had crashes in the Plex Commercial Skipper and then that was fixed in a later beta. Just wanted to see which beta was used and when.

It would be the media path - wherever your recorded media ends up in your filesystem

In the examples seen in the last logs, it was here

D:\Recorded TV\PLEXepisodes\Dr. Phil (2002)\Season 21\
D:\Recorded TV\PLEXepisodes\The Kelly Clarkson Show (2019)\Season 04\

getting a diagnostics for a reccording where commercial skips fails to remove ads

That is a misleading log line - I have asked for it to be changed. No crashdumps were detected - it is simply retries are not allowed by default - if there was a failure to upload

Anyway - I have done some extensive tests and I have established that commercials do get removed in 1.29.2.6364

For 1.30.0 - commercials were also removed ok when I used the 64-bit build.
The commercials were not removed when I used the 32-bit build which is what you are running on

The development team will look into the problem.

You could switch to the 64-bit build for 1.30.0.6442 and run with the diagnostic setting I advised and see if that resolves the issue for you. If not, please provide the diagnostic files that I mentioned which would be in the recording directory with filenames similar to the recording file name - except for the filename extension and the debug server logs zip

The commercial skipper diagnostics are enabled by the steps outlined here

Can you kindly tell me how I can get to the 64bit software file download and more so is it possible to migrate to 64 bit without having to trash my 32bit build completely? I built this server in Dec 2019 knowing it was 64 bit and I think if there was a 64 bit version PLEX I could access I am sure I would have installed it as I did that on my first install on another machine which no longer has PLEX but which I migrated from. In any event can I simply download a 64 bit version and run it and it will simply uninstall 32 bit and install the 64 bit while preserving PLEX general settings as well as my library reference links for recording storage as well as the GUIDE recording schedules, etc. OR do I have to set that ALL UP AGAIN. I hope not. And considering the 32 bit seems sluggish on an AMD RTX 2070 processor with NVIDIA 2070 graphics card too with NOTHING else running here of significance maybe those issues will go away too with the issues you know you have already with 32 bit now from this original post…

Why…because after getting home minutes ago I noticed 3 programs were being recorded and PLEX was having issues. When I tried to start a client whether desktop or web it would not connect to the local PLEX server whithin my home. So I went directly on the PLEX server and tried the same and it would not connect clients YET it showed 3 programs being recorded on my HD HOMERUN tuner. Though the server itself was fine PLEX seemed to be locked up to some extent. I restarted it but it still would not client connect. I forced reboot and only after that reboot would PLEX accept connections. Again the server itself was generally fine otherwise. This has happened before which I have ignored and seems to happen once a month or so. I have lost the recordings of these programs now. More so when I try to start/continue recording the programs by stopping them and restart a recording program only 1 of the 3 would. Normally upon reboot plex continues recording and did not. Now these programs are on just major networks and nothing special channel wise. The channels are not protected mark and neverh ave been as they are simply local channels out of the major city next to me. It seems you have ongoing issues with 32 bit and no I don’t want to debug your software anymore for days and weeks.

Edit by @sa2000 to remove the bold text for the whole post

From here. Select Windows → Choose Distribution → Windows 64-bit. And yes, you can migrate by simply installing the 64-bit version. If you have any installation “cleaner” software installed, disable it before doing this. No, you don’t need to change anything about your configuration, including your recording schedules, solely because you are upgrading to the 63-bit version.

As a side note, why on earth did you bold an entire paragraph to ask that question?

If its bold…oops not intentional…sorry. I will edit and fix. Regarding your instructions you say FROM HERE…is that a link?

Nevermind I downloaded from here: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

Edited by @sa2000 to remove the bold text - paragraph appears to be in bold if there is a row of dashes after it

Derp, that’s on me! Luckily you found the correct link. I had it on my clipboard and everything, just forgot to paste it. So much egg, so little face.

NP and thanks. I will try to install 64 bit over 32 bit but will do a WIN Restore Point first just in case.

I have installed 64 bit over the 32 bit. So far so good which was the v1.29. I downloaded the v1.30.n 64bit version and installed it said was available. Will monitor for recording commercial removals. Good to see that migration was handled nicely without having to reset anything though I did backup the PLEX data area folders.
I was wondering if 32bit besides commericial removal issue has issues still with the 30 second advance while live recording as that seemed not to work for me with the advancement seemingly to move me to some past point in the video often if not restarting it from beginning. I will practice with the must be in 30+minutes recorded show before trying this on the new 64bit version.
Also regarding my 32 bit version…seems I installed 32bit then when rebuilding a new rig probably because 64bit was not yet avaialbe? but I did install the 64 bit media player…so a little confusion on my part most likely. Both at 64 now. Stay tuned.

So Plex team member. The 64 bit seems to be removing commercials ok with my migration from 32 bit to 64bit. But I have a question on the commericial marking option for recordings. What is the point of this? I wouild expect if I am recording a show and if i.e. the recording has 3 back to back commercials and I fast forward it thru the commercials it would go immediately to the end of the last commercial of the 3. Instead I have to fast forward it as many times as there is commercials. What am I missing on intent of this feature?
