What is this? I’m watching a DVD of a TV show that I did digitalized from DVD and put on my media server and now, every now and then, I’m served with some kind of injected commercials?
Is that the best that Plex can do, instead of fixing the myriad of problems? Work on injecting commercials into your own library?
More than likely it is not Plex that is injecting commercials into your show but rather Plex is choosing a movie from its own content. That is the movie involved exists in at least two places (Plex’s library and your library) and Plex is choosing the one that it supply’s rather than yours.
As far as i have heard Plex never ever injects commercials into a stream that is truly from the local file system.
Of course, with Plex just about anything is possible.
I doubt it’s a movie that exists in Plex library. It’s actually an old TV series, Space 1999, that I did digitalize from my DVD collection. Each episode resides on my own server.
Every now and then there’s claims by users that Plex is injecting ads into their personal content. Plex have been adamant they don’t do that.
So far, the closest we got to something like this was users thinking they’re streaming local content while they’re actually watching some of Plex’ video-on-demand or live-streaming content (as per BeattifulCadaver’s 1st response).
Quite some time ago there’s been situations where streaming boxes started injecting ads in video streams. I don’t remember if this was part of those platforms or if they had been hacked / were using some bad sideloads.
Can you confirm you actually played that episode from your own server (not some online stream)?
Can you confirm you don’t see any “injected ads” when you play that media locally on your Mac (e.g. using VLC)?
On what client/app are you experiencing those “injected ads”? Is it only one platform or do you get to see them on different players / Plex apps?
I had stopped the episode I was watching because I didn’t want to watch 2 minutes of commercials. After reading the responses here, specially from Tom, I went back to watch the same episode. This time, I checked the external hard disk that stores my entire library. The activity light on it was flashing so I knew the drive was reading from its disks. This time, not a single commercial. So, maybe BeattifulCadaver was right, it’s just very weird that a substitution like this would happen. Is there any way to prevent this from happening in the future? That was the first time ever that I did experience this…
What are you talking about it’s not allowed to be discussed here?
All you need to do is uncheck “More Ways to Watch” as a location to search.
You just need to click into the search box and then click the icon that appears to the right and then uncheck “More Ways to Watch” and then when you search that won’t be included as part of the results.
That is the only way I can see selecting the version hosted by Plex.
I just checked on the Android TV app on my Shield and the same icon appears there when clicking into the search bar, so my guess is that would exist in all the apps.
I am also guessing if you unpin the Discover section from the menu, that will also turn it off as I have that unpinned and the option was already unselected in the search settings (though it’s possible I did that manually at one point).
I just checked, and Space 1999 is indeed available on Plex Movies and Shows.
Besides “More Ways To Watch,” you’ll also need to unpin the Plex Moves and Shows from your home page, or else results from there will show up in search, too. At least they do in my web client.
Thank you all. I didn’t have the “More ways to watch” enabled. But I did unpin the “Discover”. Hopefully, that will take care of it and not happen anymore.
Thank you @shark2k ! And also @tom80H and @Dalmus . I also disabled the online media sources.
