Concert (and other non-traditional) Naming Question

@OttoKerner

I’ve gone back and forth on using “Movie” or “Other Video” for my concerts that are ‘not’ officially released discs. They are mostly live streams of concerts. But I decided to use the regular “movie” library so I could also include the official concert video discs in the same library, and then do the manual work for the streams. OK enough for me.

But there’s a few oddities that I can’t quite pin down, and I assume its a formatting question and how Plex reads my filenames. Its a particular issue for concerts that are a few nights in a row.

Let’s use Phish at Madison Square Garden for New Years Eve as an example. For context, Phish generally plays 4 nights of the NYE weekend at MSG. So there’s Dec 28, 29, 30, and 31 for a bunch of years.

My file and folder names have been “Phish 2024-12-2x MSG (2024).mkv” and Phish 2024-12-31 MSG (2024).mkv" in their respective folder names, per the Plex naming guide. I know Plex is trying to match the movie, but I’d have expected the unmatched movie name to be “Phish 2024-12-31” but it only shows up as “Phish.”

Previously I used my old file naming “Phish - 2024-12-31 - MSG.mkv”, but that caused even more headaches, presumably because of the hyphenation and lack of (year) in the format. This format causes similarly named (but not identically named) to all be seen as the same concert and merged together, requiring me to split apart the titles. Plex then sees all 4 of the shows with the same title, resulting in 4 titles of “Phish 2024-12-31” and a bunch of manual fixes. I probably should use “other videos” with this naming convention.

I similarly just added “Billy Strings 2024-12-31 (2024) NoLA.mkv” in its proper folder, but it was matched as “Billy Strings 2022.10.31” which isn’t a disc either, so I don’t understand the match.

I had hoped that using the proper naming would have at least left me with distinct - yet unmatched - titles. Where is my disconnect?

Also curious how to best handle sports. I used to have a plug-in, but no idea where I put it. Should I just use the “other” video library and move on?

I don’t think there is any other solution than using “Split” on the affected posters.

Ok. Thanks as always.

Edit: How did I never come across “Personal Media” agents before? Seems like exactly what I need. I should be able to group an event such as “Phish @ MSG 2023” and then each of the concerts associated with it.

Still…Any theories on why PMS doesn’t at least see them as distinct, unidentifiable titles? For whatever reason, PMS decided to group about a dozen different folders into one title. I just want to minimize the amount of manual work I have to do. Is it simply because the Plex agents are always going to try and match them?

Similar with sports. I’ve got a bunch of archived “classic” games. Like “MLB.2021.09.17.Baltimore.Orioles.vs.Boston.Red.Sox.mkv”. Guessing I can come up with a good structure using the personal agents.
