I am new to Plex, unsure if there is something already documented but I have yet to find a solution in the Plex Community.
I use Plex on my laptop and Samsung TV, and I am trying to Confirm that I am using my home network vs utilizing my Comcast internet to access my Plex library. The way I have tested this is by editing the “quality web client” settings - for Internet streaming I have it set to 0.2mbps and for Home streaming I have it set to “8mbps”
and on my laptop and Samsung tv, I check the quality settings of a movie I am playing, and it shows “0.2mbs” which makes me believe that my tv is streaming internet.
But my concern/question is: does internet streaming mean that I am using my internet data? one of the benefits of Plex that I am hoping to utilize is the fact that the content streaming to my devices is all home/local network and does not use my internet data.
Is there any way to confirm that my Plex content is local??
On the main page of the Plex Web client, take a look at the server name in the upper, left corner, under the ‘Home icon.’
Does it say ‘Indirect’ or does it show a yellow exclamation mark?
Thank you so much for the reply. Looking at my server name (i only have one) i see a checkmark, a green lock icon, and underneath I see the words “Nearby”
This means that, at least when playing in this web browser, you are streaming directly from the server. Without redirecting the data over the internet.
The green padlock gives a hint that the communication between server and client is also encrypted.
And if encryption is working in your browser, there’s a high likelihood that other clients in your local network are also work like they should (i.e. streaming directly from the server).
Thanks so much. I realized, in case anyone else is experiencing the same issues, that the devices that were not locally playing were on a guest network and that’s why it was considered “remote”
Such a headache, but so glad to have this resolved. Thank you for your help!
