I have two Netgear ReadyNAS systems. The first has PLEX Media Server installed and I can access it remotely from any device. The second NAS simply backs up the first NAS. It currently doesn’t have PLEX Media Server installed. I am out of town currently, and my first NAS is offline. I’m not certain what is wrong, but I think perhaps the UPS that it is plugged into has failed.
Anyway, I’d like to install PLEX Media Server on the second NAS and have it available as a backup server. All the media files are already there. I think I can install PMS on the second NAS and choose the libraries present on that NAS. I think I can claim the server once it is running. But I’m confused about how the port forwarding will have to be different than my first NAS.
Currently my source port is “any” going to port 32400 on 192.168.0.9. The new PMS will be on 192.168.0.11. Do I add a similar router rule with the source listed as “any” going to 32400 on 192.168.0.11? Or do I need to now specify specific source ports that are different for each NAS? This confuses me.
I’m hoping that ultimately I could still remotely connect to PLEX from any device, and just have to choose which server using a drop down menu in the client. Please advise. Thanks!
So since my current setup for one NAS uses “any” external port, do I now need to assign specific single but different external ports to both router entries? Do I have to specify these external ports in any of the clients I use, i.e. Windows player, android tv, android cell phone, etc?
External Port: The port advertised for use by a given server. This matches the port defined in Settings → Remote Access. This number must be unique for each Plex server (as shown in the screenshot).
Internal Port: Always 32400.
Source IP: This will always be blank/any/all (varies by router, the above pic is from an Asus). This is the IP address of the remote client - mobile phone, Smart TV, etc. You do not want any limits, since you do not know the source IP address (for example, the IP address of a mobile phone changes with location).
No.
When remote access is enabled, your servers register their IP address and port number with plex.tv.
When you launch an app, it checks with plex.tv, sees which servers you can access, then provides the IP address & port number to the app. The app then communicates with the server.
Thank you JaysPlex7 and FordGuy61. With the different external port numbers pointing to different server IPs, will the PLEX client just show both servers as options to choose from and load their respective libraries? Also, are the external ports listed above good ones to use, i.e. not conflicting with lots of other apps? Or is there a range of non-conflicting ports to choose from?
I’ve run into a new issue. I don’t know if anyone will know the explanation. As I mentioned, I’m currently out of town with no PLEX access. It’s brutal!
I can remote desktop into a home LAN computer. From that computer I can use the desktop ReadyCLOUD app to connect to the administrative page of my second NAS. However, when I try to install the PLEX media server on that second NAS, I get an error message saying PMS couldn’t be installed. There’s no explanation why. I don’t know if it has to do with my remote desktop connection into the LAN. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Will I just have to wait until I’m home to install PMS on the second NAS? Thanks!
Netgear must have not updated their install files of available apps for their ReadyNAS. Using remote desktop, I was just clicking on their PLEX media server icon and choosing install. That consistently failed. The only log entry for the NAS said installation failed. I couldn’t find any specific logs for the PLEX app. Fortunately, I had saved the latest PMS file for ReadyNAS and tried uploading that instead. It installed perfectly and I now have remote PLEX access to my second NAS. Thanks for the help.
