Greetings,
I am confused about how Plex handles music genres. I sort my music after genre, and I use mp3tag to fix the tags of my files. For example, I have a Trance folder and all of the (mp3) tracks there have the genre Trance. But then when I try to sort the tracks in Plex by this tag, I only find “Album Genre” and “Artist Genre”. And the selection is incorrect, for example if I have 100 tracks in the folder, Plex finds more than 100, so it must pull that data from somewhere.
I configured the library and agents to only look for local metadata, so it doesn’t search for data on the internet.
Given Plex doesn’t derive genre information from a folder structure… could it be as simple as files from other folders also having an Trance genre tag?
Yes, the Trance tag is derived from the ID3 tag embedded in the file. However the standard ID3 tag only has “Genre” and not “Album Genre” or “Artist Genre”. I believe that “Album Genre” is “Genre”, not sure about the other.
Ok so I did just that and it’s still a mess. For some reason, now the tag isn’t pulled from some tracks. Not only that, but I discovered that Plex actually looks for an “album genre”, which in my opinion is wrong. If I try to edit a single track, I don’t get the genre tag, but if I try to edit the entire album, I do. Genres are track specific, not album specific, so why does Plex do this?
Anyway, an example of a tag not being pulled:
