ok so… I have had a plex server for years and it’s always been able to display the genres i have on all my mp3 tags on my mp3 music. I’ve now created a brand new plex server at another home of ours and it’s the same version listed here just started from scratch today. I was not able to get plex to show my genres from my tags in mp3 files. so i deleted the music library and started over with just 1 genre. i have music from only a small set of genres, if i use mp3tag app ALL i mean ALL my mp3s are tagged by genre “perfectly” hence i have my original plex windows server that uses them fine.
so… i ensured I have a complete Music library setting match for match with my old server.
Scanner - Plex Music
Agent - Plex Music
Prefer local metadata “checked”
Genres - Embedded Tags
Album Art - Both Plex Music and Local Files
those to me were the most important ones. i can’t figure out WTF is going on and i’m just so at wits end on this. can anyone offer me help on this ? i can’t tell you how many times i have deleted and recreated this Music library on this new server trying to get it to be able to list my genres from my MP3 tags, and yes i’ve sorted by Alums or Artists and the genre under each are not right. for example i have created new music library , added 5 artists from genre “50s” , if i look at all files in mp3tag app they all list genre as “50s” , except plex lists them as genre “Darkwave” where the heck plex got that from I have no idea. I even checked in settings Artists and Albums and “Local Media Assets” are at the top of the list of both. So i GIVE up i don’t know how i get my proper genres to import correctly :(. thanks for any help.
so i found if i create a new Music library from scratch, set AGent in settings to Personal media Artists, in addition to the settings i mentioned above. then import just a few artists from 1 genre then i get my genre tags imported, BUT no image appears for the artists because i switched Agent from Plex Music , again i’m at a loss why i’m even having this problem, when i have another plex server that i can compare to that is setup exactly the same, makes no sense why i’m having to play whack a mole with settings to try and figure out what’s wrong, i should be able to make settings the same as the other server, which is what i did from the get go. this seems like a bug for new installs using the version i have reported, the only difference in my other plex server is it was installed many many years ago and has been updated over the years. but again both are running the exact same version today.
I’ve just added a new album in mp3 format. The genres got imported just as I tagged them.
I am using “Plex Music”, with
Prefer local metadata “checked”
Genres - Embedded Tags
well i did a Bruno Mars song and it came in fine WTF :). i just took the 5 artists that came in as “Darkwave” when should have been “50s” and manually changed them, this still baffles me, the tags are “perfect” smh
Maybe you are expecting Plex to show genre from each single song?
Plex doesn’t store genre per song. It reads them all and then assigns them to the album.
And if the album is a sampler, then it gets a bit more confusing.
What kind of albums where the ones involved in the mixup?
How were they organized?
Are you using a folder structure?
Do you distinguish between “(song) artist” and “album artist” when tagging your files?
Yes, this is actually a regression that got introduced with the “new” scanner (which is not so new anymore, 3 years now?). With the old music scanner, if
Track 1: Genre = Pop;Rock
Track 2: Genre = Hip-Hop
you’d get three album genres “Pop”, “Rock” and “Hip-Hop” (applied to all tracks on the album). But with the current scanner, you only get “Pop”, “Rock”. It’s very annoying.
How did you even get this? I’m not seeing Genre anyplace, except on the “Smart” filters, which just has genre for Album and Artist - which I suppose comes from an online library, not my MP3 tags. Even when I edit the library entry, it’s not showing a Genre field. I really want to use MY genres, as I might want a track to be genre “Christmas”, for example. And if you go with the “official” genres, you only will get 1-2 artists per genre, because the genres are so ambiguous and numerous. I mean, “Classic Rock”, “Hard Rock”, “Rock”, “College Rock”, “Wet Rock”, “Soft Rock”, “Folk Rock”, “Industrial Rock”, “Pop Rock”, “Rock & Roll”… let me call songs what I want to call them so I can get what I want!
