Confusion about label metadata?

I thought I had a handle on Plex’s record label metadata, but after seeing some strange things I’m still very confused. There are messages re “label” tags saying all kinds of things on the forum, going back years, so I was hoping someone could share a personal solution, or someone from the Plex staff could say something about this?

I see SOME files where my TPUB (e.g. record label) tag is reflected in the “Record Label” field, and SOME where it’s not. I’ve looked at the id3 tags of these files directly, and I can’t see any difference between them, e.g. they both have valid, ordinary-looking TPUB tags and tags in general. This is in a Library with “Prefer Local Metadata” is enabled - I tried updating the mod time of the files and re-scanning metadata just in case there was an issue there, but no change. I also tried copying the files into a NEW Library, and saw the same thing reflected in the new library (e.g. one album picked up Label, one didn’t).

I’m a bit baffled at what’s going on here - ofc the Record Labels feature in Plex Amp is super cool, but it’s maddening when the labels only have like 1 out of 5 releases in spite of all of them being tagged, it’s been driving me nuts forever.

Is the check box “Prefer local metadata” enabled in the music library properties?
If it’s not, then deviating data from Musicbrainz can override your embedded meta tags.
But you should only enable this check box if your embedded meta tags are flawless, or you can screw up your library.

Also, if the file format is not MP3, but flac, you ought to use LABEL instead of PUBLISHER.

“Prefer local metadata” is enabled, and the files are mp3, it doesn’t seem to make a difference.
