I have had Plex running for a while now and have been quite happy with it. I have a Plex Pass, but my wife does not.
I set my wife up as a “Home User” and this has been working fine for us. However, I now want to add my young son into the mix. I added him as a “Younger Kid”, and that’s fine, but I want to limit him to accessing his own account.
My account was easy enough to lock down as I could set a PIN.
It appears that I can also set a PIN for my son (who is a Managed User), but I don’t plan to do that.
However, for my wife, it appears that I can’t do anything to prevent others from accessing her account. Is there some way to secure my wife’s account, or is that some kind of Plex Pass feature?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can’t seem to figure this out right now.
(My Plex Media Server is running on a Raspberry Pi 4, if that makes a difference)
Your wife is not a managed user. She is using a fully separate plex.tv user account.
You might think that she is managed because you can see her at the “Switch User” screen.
But that was achieved by inviting her full account into your Plex Home. But doing so doesn’t make her a “managed” user.
TL;DR:
she has to set a PIN herself.
By logging in with her own user credentials at plex.tv (use a separate web browser or at east an “incognito”/“privacy” browser tab) and then going to https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/users-sharing
Wow, I wasn’t expecting such a swift reply. Now that you’ve explained it like that, it makes some sense. It would be good if that could be indicated in some way via the UI. As you say, if I go to the screen for managing users, there is nothing to differentiate my wife’s account from my son’s account (aside from being unable to set a PIN). Whilst my account has a little crown on there with a note to say that I’m “admin”.
Either way, the documentation around users is pretty confusing, though I’m not sure how it could be improved as the subject matter itself is pretty complex, what with “users”, “invited full-users”, “managed users”, “friends” …
Anyway, I’m rambling. Thank you for the prompt and clear response. I will have a go with this later and see how we get on.
A thought occcured to me:
Can you try this:
In Plex Web, “Switch User” to your wife’s account
then visit the Users & Sharing page
Can you now put a PIN on your wife’s account?
