Plex Home - Problem with Managed Users / User select

Hi, I actually wanna use managed users feature to let my son watch certain media. Admin user is protected with a pin. But when my son logs into Plex account he is not asked to select a user. He is just logged in as admin without entering my pin. Whats going on there??

That’s intended. Since he logged in with your account, the apps assume it’s you. With your account info, a person can change/remove your pin, so you shouldn’t share your password if you don’t want them to have access to your admin account. The idea for a managed user is that you control that account, so they are not allowed to authenticate a new device. Only the admin can do that. You log in then switch users to then allow that managed user to use the device. If you want to allow your son to activate devices, you should create a regular Plex account for him. He can then sign in with his username and password.

Yeah I tried that first. But using his own account my son cannot use Plex Player without having his own Plex Pass and he is also not able to sync media in case he is offline.
I am really wondering. I mean, I have paid 120 Dollars for a lifetime Pass and now I’m faced with such annoying limitations. Feels like getting bossed around…

He does not need a Plex Pass to use Sync. You control that as the admin in the sharing rules.

But that’s the point behind managed users. They have limited access to your server.

Have your son create a new plex account using his own email address.

then add his new account to your home.

then remove the old managed user for him.

as long as he is a member of your home, he won’t need plex pass for his device unlock (only mobile devices need unlocked anyway).

once he has his own account, then he will have his own user/pass that he can log into whatever devices without knowing yours.

My text was not clear, I see. The point is, with an own account he can not use Plex Player, what is needed to sync, without paying for it. And that is ok as long as I can use the managed users feature instead. But using that feature breaks the protection of my admins user when I want him to be able to log into a new device. All I want is to have that “select user” screen right after logging into my account. It makes no sense to auto join admin account.

you are wrong.

he can have a separate account, that is invited to your home.

sync does not require a plex pass on his account.

unlock does not require a plex pass if he is invited to your home.

Yeah that is the point.

This is a poor assumption on plex’s part, and I agree that if a the admin user has a PIN, then it should ALWAYS be required, and never assumed, just because someone shared their log in, or got HACKED.

Yes it is. So when my Son uses his own account invited to certain libraries of mine he can use the Plex Player for 1 min and then he gets the message that he needs to unlock the player for the device.

But the point of a managed user is they cannot login themselves into a new device. That takes away from the admin controlling a managed user.

Yeah but the question is, why? I want him to be allowed…

That is all I want. Thanks!

Maybe, but no one should ever be logging in using the admin account, if they are not the admin. Keep in mind that the PIN is not a security feature, it’s more of a deterrent to members in your home. That’s why only trusted members should be included in your home. Getting hacked, well that’s a different story. But again, if someone has the admin password, they can change/remove the pin so it doesn’t really solve anything to show the PIN when you use the admin credentials.

wilmaw, please re-read my post @ Plex Home - Problem with Managed Users / User select

there are 2 kinds of users for plex.

  • shared users
  • home users

home users (managed or separate accounts) do not require their own plex pass

Then let them have their own Plex account.

I am not talking about a Pass but he must unlock by paying for the app.

But then he can not use the Player App on his mobile devices without paying for it.

NO HE DOES NOT IF YOU INVITE HIS ACCOUNT TO YOUR HOME!!!

please re-read until you understand.

home user = does not need their own plex pass/unlock

shared user = need their own plex pass or unlock

I totally understand your text but I have tried that and he can not. It just plays for 1 minute…
