Constant freezing on 4k playback

Hi,

Well as the title says, when i playback I get freezing of any 4k content. The error i get back is the network is not fast enough to stream the content, try lowering the setting. I am tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. When i stream the file to VLC on my computer it streams without a single hitch so I know its not the MKV.

Brief summary of my set up:
Dual x5650 server with 52Gb ram (24 logical cores) Windows 10
Plex running on a VM with all resources assigned. Windows 7
RAM disk assigned for transcoding (20Gb)
Maximum concurrent steams - 2 maybe 3.
Plex server version 1.13.3.5208

Players
Nvidia Shield
Chrome through a NUC
Amazon fire 4k

All players have the same problem. I have tested the network speed and as you can see i am getting full Gb throughput (see picspeed

The video file i am trying to use is Black Panther here are the details, the plex server is in direct play, server has loads of free resource available.

Finally, the media, this is happening with all my 4k content but here is an exract for Black panther:

The hardware i am watching it on is a Samsung 75mu6100 with a denon x2200w amp 5.1 in DTS true HD audio. everything works except for these damn freezes!!

Can anyone help please?

How is your Shield connected to the network? Have you done a speedtest between your server and the Shield?

Chrome does not support HEVC and the Fire TV does not support DTS or TrueHD audio. You would not be direct playing to these clients so I think you have different scenarios going on.

Hi movie fan,

Good points, so all devices are gig wired to the network.

I can’t really think of how to do a speed test on the shield so I am open to suggestions on that one.

The amazon fire can bitstream I believe, just pass through to the amp so it displays as PCM

Are there any other apps other than Plex that could play the file on the shield? VLC maybe? See if that will stream without buffering?

I am trying to get smooth playback for 4K content, open to any suggestions on how to achieve it, so far I’ve spent a fortune on hardware, 1 oled 1 Samsung 4K, 1 amp, 5.1 focal domes, shield, pc, amazon fire 4K oh and the server…

Nothing plays smooth playback.

Edit: also worth mentioning when I play back through the LG Oled Plex app and the Samsung app I get the same symptom, 5-10 seconds of playback followed by a 5 second freeze over and over

The Shield has gig ports so that probably isn’t the problem.

Access the drive in the Shield from the PC and copy a file.

But, it cannot decode the DTS/TrueHD to PCM. PMS would have to do that.

Nope.

This sounds like an issue with your server. Can you recreate the issue and provide both the PMS and client logs? Use the Shield, as it’s logs are more informative.

hi mate, i have downloaded the logs but there are a lott, which log file is it you want? i cant find one called client but can see plex media server.log

as a part of my fault finding process i have removed the, amp from the equation, just shield direct to tv but its still the same symptomPlex Media Server.log (2.7 MB)

blue planet is the file played

Plex Media Server.log (3.1 MB)
here is another one, i played blackpanther from approx 19.57 to 20.01

Please provide the entire zip file.

For the client log, I meant the log from the Shield. https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

Your PMS logs show the issue. It appears to be a connection issue between the client and PMS getting lost. I’ll need to see the Shield logs to confirm.

hi movie fan, you seem to be on to it here, i have just created a mapped drive from plex to the internal storeage and transferred a 3gb file, i was getting around 18mbps!

when i am on the internal storage on the shield i cant see anything related to plex, bearing in mind i am not running PMS as a server on the shield, just a client/ i have tried to FTp but keep getting connection refused, open to ideas on that one. im going to hook up a pc to the same ethernet cable now and post back results

ok, same cable, same plug same hdmi lead everything and i am getting 133mbps! looks like i am off to the nvidia forum. i hope they are as helpful as you have been.

thanks movie fan, you are one of the best!

The Shield shouldn’t have an issue itself. I’ve personally tried videos 40-60 Mbps without issues so I know it should be able to handle it.

You said you were having similar issues with other clients, so it might not be totally be a Shield issue. Could be PMS running on your PC having an issue too.

I notice that your Plex DLNA is also running and being used. Try turning that off temporarily and see if that improves things. DLNA can mess up a network and slow everything down.

ok, strangely i just checked and DLNA is unticked. restarted the playback and again its freezing.

i have removed the shield and plugged in the fire 4k and tried the same test, again no amp, this is plugged directly in to the tv now. amazon plays back from amazon prime in UHD all streams appear fine no buffering.

when i try 4k plex i get conversion failed.loggs attachedPlex Media Server Logs_2018-06-27_22-29-34.zip (4.5 MB)
thanks again, i really appreciate you looking at this with me, i need to decide if i am going to send the fire back, get a swap, get a refund, buy a powerfull pc or what!

With the Fire TV you are actually running into another bug. This one is PMS related. You are playing a 4k video which needs to be transcoded. PMS is trying to create a 4k output, which it can’t do right now so it fails. You can roll back PMS to an earlier version. I haven’t tracked down exactly when this occurred so you may need to try a few different versions.

Hi,

Bit of a development, I tried installing VLC and ES file explorer, when I playback the 4K file this way it plays no problem. I don’t know what is happening in the background regarding any transcoding or anything but playback is smooth.

I would you mind looking at the logs again? Where can I find the client logs on the shield?

Playing back using VLC is totally different from using the Plex app. It’s not a direct comparison.

Ok, I won’t pretend to understand the mechanics but rather just agree with you, however, it doesn’t change the fact that on VLC I get 4K streaming with TrueHD audio, same movie with Plex doesn’t play, constant freezing.

If you can help it would be appreciated.

For now, there is a bug in the app.
