Hoping the Plex geniuses here can help because I’m at the end of my patience!
Of late all I seem to get is a banner message saying my connection to the server isn’t fast enough. This pops up on iPad and Apple TV playing various media when it never used to before. My media plays fine through alternative apps but I am a plex boy and want to try and fix this!
Can someone please help talk me through what I need to do to try and identify the cause?
I’m running the latest public PMS on a Mac Mini, the latest app versions and I’m on a wired (via power line) network.

I’d start with checking disk space (so that you have enough free space on your disk). It needs to be equal the size of the file being transcoded. If the file is 20GB in size, you need 20GB free.
Directory to use when transcoding temporary files for streaming. This is useful if your primary drive has limited space.
Tip!: The directory used (whether default or not) needs sufficient free space, roughly equal to the size of the source file of the transcode plus 100MB.
If it is not a free space issue, it could be permission related. But unsure how diluted that is within MacOSX from its Darwin roots and how Plex runs on it so can’t help much in that regard.
I’ll be shocked if it is that… apart from the OS, Chrome and a download manager there’s nothing on that machine! All my media is held on external hard drives. I’ll take a look when I get home though.
Then it most likely is a permission issue. I have no idea how Plex runs on MacOSX, if it is like on Linux that it runs under its own user etc, so you’ll have to wait for someone that can give you more help with that.
Guys I’ve been getting this the last few releases as well. I get this even when direct playing media already in the correct format with semi-low bitrates (under 10).
I haven’t bothered to check the logs since my logs grow so fast it’s hard to find stuff. For me it’s not a CPU issue or a space issue (at least it should not be). I can cause this to happen when I’m thrashing the disk subsystem. For example I just added additional storage and I’m moving files from different discs. i also have SnapRAID running so the disc subsystem is pegged at 100%.
However, Plex gets priority of the disk so the transfers will only use what’s left over. I wonder if Plex is checking metrics like CPU, LAN, disc subsystem and throwing up that error when it encounters something over a limit? A few versions back I would never get an error like this even with a lot of disc subsystem activity.
It was late here hence the delay in posting! I’ve attached the entire folder as previously mentioned. Hoping for a fix because I fear my plex pass may become useless pretty quickly
In an effort to “try” and resolve the disk space calculation issue I created a new temp directory and pointed Plex to that. I am still getting constant “Your connection to the server isn’t fast enough” messages. My media is completely unwatchable through Plex and I’ve had to switch to Infuse as there are just no issues playing anything.
It’s getting to the stage where I may consider leaving Plex altogether because I’m not splashing out on new hardware, but I really don’t want to after getting a lifetime plex pass…
If by ‘remote access’ you mean outside my home then no. I only watch media, and these issues are a result from, playing on my local home network.
I haven’t had these issues before, only since the start of the year (roughly) and I’d like to think I have a decent home network. The performance of other things suggests it can’t be a network issue.
Appreciate your help - that and the great product you guys make is making me stick it out for now
