I’m using Plex with TinyMediaManager and this is driving my minor OCD up a wall. I’ve seen other posts about this but I can’t get this to work.
I have a multi-episode file, call it Season 1, Episodes 1, 2, and 3.
When I call it S01E01-E03, I get only one instance in TMM and one file in Plex, but it calls it Ep. (1).
When I call it S01E01-E02-E03, I get the entire episode in Plex but TWICE in Plex, Ep (1) and Ep. (2). I’d expect three repeats, but it gives me two…?
I’ve removed it completely from the NAS and Plex and started over, which has worked for other shows, but not in this instance.
I can live with the first result, but I’ve done it before with other shows and it shouldn’t be this difficult. What’s the proper convention?
TMM is TinyMediaManager. When I do that convention I still get two files, eachwith all three episodes, but two instances labeled Title (1) and Title (2) in Plex.
I found a splitter called MKVToolNixGui that I can use to chop them up, or I can just see what works as I didn’t have trouble with another show. I named that one S01E01-E02-E03 and it worked, so it’s inconsistent.
Season 2 episodes 4 and 5 are a double. I have them in one file called S02E04-E05 as suggested above.
Problem is that it messes up the episode name of all files after the double. In this example E04 is correctly named “Reign Storm” but E05 should be “Reign Storm (2)” but it’s showing as “Identity Crisis” which is the name for E06. E06 has the name for E07 and so on, when we get to the end and there is no name and it just shows the filename.
Transformers: Animated. I did TMNT (2013) just fine, it could be one show doesn’t like it…or for whatever reason TMM and Plex handle different shows differently. Is it a big deal? No, but I’d like to be consistent and clean it up.
I split them in like 5 seconds based on timestamps. I could even just call it Ep1. Just wondering what the heck the convention should be.
It also mentions why having part x at the end of a file name can lead to mixups.
Make sure to have either no embedded metadata in your mp4 files, or 100% correct ones.
If you don’t want to wrangle embedded metadata, make them less important for Plex:
Go to
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie

After experimenting with different file namings and encountering mis-matches in Plex, you may have to Plex Dance
