Naming of TV Shows

I have many files with 2 episodes in one, for example S01E06E07
Plex shows it only as Episode 6·One Big Happy Family
How can I get it to show Episode 6 . One Big Happy Family - Episode 7 . The Last Balloon

Have you tried this format? (From this article.) I haven’t done this for quite some time, but the last time I tried it I think it worked…

Multiple Episodes in a Single File

If a single file covers more than one episode, name it as follows:

  • /TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17-e18 – Optional_Info.ext

Where you specify the appropriate season, episode numbers (the first and last episode covered in the file), and file extension.

Currently MCM names the file
Rugrats (2021) - 1x06-x07 - One Big Happy Family, The Last Balloon.mkv

in

TV Shows/Rugrats (2021)/Season1/Rugrats (2021) - 1x06-x07 - One Big Happy Family, The Last Balloon.mkv

Plex won’t be dealing with that schema.
If you’re using the example from your 1st post / 1st line → don’t forget the - between the 1st/last episodes in the file (e.g. S01E06-E07)

Thanks, I’ll give that a go and if it works I’ll need to rename thousands of TV Show files
Plex wasn’t around when I first start using MCM to rename files
So what renaming convention would I need to use?

Not familiar with the app… and couldn’t find any guidance on tv naming patterns in their Wiki.

I have remaned the file to Rugrats (2021) - S01E06-E07 - One Big Happy Family, The Last Balloon.mkv
now it shows up in Plex as seperate episodes so E06 starts playing fine but playing E07 starts playing E06 again so somethings not right

This is how multi-episode files are currently handled by Plex. So it’s kind of “by design”.
If you’re watching the show, Plex should offer you to continue w/ s01e08 after watching s01e06-e07.

There’s a suggestion to change how multi-episode files are being displayed (showing only a single item with some form of merged title/description) – though not sure this is going to happen as apparently not too many users have yet voted for it.

Yes, it will continue to E08 after watching E06-E07 but would be nice for Plex to let you know you are watching 2 episodes in one, some of the earlier Rugrats has 3 episodes in one as most of them are 11 mins long.
Must be hundreds of Plex users out there with multiple episodes in one file, voted or not it’s not that major as the file plays fine, just those few like me would like to see both episode names in the display name

As mentioned in Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files:

Note : Multi-episode files will show up individually in Plex apps when viewing your library, but playing any of the represented episodes will play the full file. If you want episodes to behave truly independently, you’re best off using a tool to split the file into individual episodes.

The best approach is to split the file into individual episodes. Most multi-episode files have chapter markers denoting the start of each episode. That makes it easy to determine the split points for the file.

I agree with your preference, as it is my own 100%.

However, currently Plex does not do that. In fact, it seems like we are lucky to even get support for multi-episode files in Plex like this. Plex will display the file as separate episodes, with each episode description in a different entry on the list. However, Plex has no way of knowing where the file divider is, so it makes no attempt to do so. Playing the 7th episode in an E06-E07 file just starts from the beginning of the file. Thankfully, Plex should avoid playing E06 (which plays 7 as well) then E07 (which plays 6, then 7 AGAIN).

For now, I “break” Plex’s detection of the second/third episode in a file. I mark a file as S01E02-03 which Plex fails to pick up. It just enters it as Episode 2, with episode 3 missing. Then, if it’s important to me, I will Edit the title and description to add in the info on how it is actually two episodes in one.

This is a bit annoying doing it this way, but since I rarely look at episode numbers/names when I watch a show, I am not too bothered that the UI is like this. I’d REALLY prefer the ability to manually/(automatically?) enter in the show split time-codes, and have Plex start the file at that code if I select that episode specifically. I’d have a lot of work on my hands, but I’d go and do that.

But… I doubt I’ll ever see that feature.

I’m not going to start splitting videos, I was going to say I just brought a car without a steering wheel, but to be honest I have brought a car without a fuel gauge
Thanks for your post divideby0

You guys must know of Media Center Master it offers an addin for Plex.
If they can rename 2 episodes in one file and is also listed on TVDB.com why is it difficult for Plex to implement?

I can only speak for myself and I’m unaware of what kind of naming schema they havf implemented in their app. As posted above, I couldn’t find any references on their homepage.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by „implementing it“?

Adding it

I suppose that’s something you have to make up with the developer of your MCM app. Plex has no say or influence on them.
