Recently myself and many of my users have been getting the “conversion failed. missing codec” error when playing various different videos of multiple different file types. Issue just popped up the other day and not sure what would have caused it. I had already updated to the latest PMS version for truenas and things were running perfectly fine.

Most common that i’ve seen are HEVC and h.264 I think. However this issue seems to be randomly determined by which device they are streaming on and it kinda picks randomly what it won’t play.

I have done multiple of the codec fixes that i’ve been able to find including deleting the codec folder and manually downloading a bunch of the codecs and putting them in the codec folder, but I still seem to be having the issue. For instance I cannot play my HEVC Main10 copy of Zootopia 2 on the web app or my samsung tv plex app (though it works on the TV with direct play enabled), but on the desktop windows app it works perfectly with no issues.

I have also tried rolling back PMS on truenas to previous versions but the issue seems to remain regardless.
Don’t know if this is an issue that is known or that others might have, i appreciate any help.

I’ve been seeing this too on the latest update. If I update to app version 1.43.0.10492 (which is the latest I can download), most of my files can no longer be played. However, rolling back to 1.42.2.10156 (Version 1.2.20 in the rollback menu), seems to get everything working again.

Check your owner/permissions on your Codecs folder and be sure not to remove the .device-id

this is exactly what i did and it seems to have worked
