Getting codec errors when transcoding - how to fix?

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5762
Player Version#: all

Since upgrading to 1.26.1.5762 (in an attempt to chase the dragon of trying to get fixes for many other things) I can now no longer transcode many files as I get the error “Playback Error Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.”

My logs show:

[HttpClient] HTTP/2.0 (1.1s) 200 response from GET https://plex.tv/api/codecs/easyaudioencoder?build=freebsd-x86_64-standard&deviceId=1a900f66-b24a-494f-a44b-16bba9fac5a2&oldestPreviousVersion=1%2E3%2E4%2E3285-b46e0ea&version=1785
[Transcode] Codecs: Failed to download XML for codec 'easyaudioencoder'
[Transcode] Error configuring transcoder: Decoder install failed: eac3_eae

I have tried deleting my contents of my codecs folder but this hasn’t fixed it. I’m on truenas in a jail.

When I go to the URL given for the XML I am given a page that says

<MediaContainer friendlyName="myPlex" identifier="com.plexapp.plugins.myplex" title="Codec Downloads" codec="easyaudioencoder" version="1785" size="0"> </MediaContainer>

so there is no download link I think?

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Edit: same issue on newly released 1.26.1.5772

I am receiving the same error on playback, but when heading to that site I get the following response:

<Response code="429" status="Limit of devices using codec exceeded"/>

On truenas?

Yes, on Truenas. On the same two plex versions as you mentioned above. It’s really frustrating.

I am having the same problems. Reverting versions isnt fixing it either.

@hazardousmedic I am curious which ISP you use? I didn’t have this issue until I switched ISPs, and the comment the following thread was I was being rate limited to access to the codec, even though I am not trying to watch many shows that require that codec.

MNSI - it’s a local ISP. I’ve been with them for over a year with no changes so I doubt that is an issue for my case. The only change on my end has been updating to PMS 1.26.1.5762, after which this issue cropped up.

I’m not being rate limited. My XML is resolving fine and I get status 200 as per my post. I think this is on Plex’s end.

This seems to be fixed now. I can transcode eac3 media and the codec is in my codecs folder again.

I’d be interested in word from someone from Plex to explain why it happened though.
