Wondering if anyone has some better ways of managing this. My scenario: I have a series of movies that I get in their original format that I convert to Optimized for TV. Once the original version is optimized for TV I typically archive the original version and then replace the version in my movies folder with the Optimized for TV version.
Once the optimized for TV version is prepared I move it to the main movie folder like I said which causes the Conversion activity view to show an error regarding the missing file that was converted. I don’t want to see this error so I delete the conversion entry or do a delete all which in the past has deleted all versions of the movie (Original and Optimized) which clearly isn’t what I want. So what I typically do now is copy the optimized version to a different location, do the Delete All to get rid of the error and then copy the file back to the main folder once everything is refreshed.
This can’t be the easiest way to replace an original version with an optimized version.
Have a look at mediacoder.
It will copy(mkv to mp4) or convert then Replaces the original and moves the original to a nominated folder!
Program has no support or manual so it will take some trial and error.
I think what the poster wanted was a way to use the optimized version and archive the original from within Plex. This would be a great feature, and I can’t imagine it would be very hard to implement.
Today, I’m forced to take the optimized versions once they’re prepared and copy them somewhere, then delete the conversion activity and then place the optimized versions back where I want them. If I don’t do this, removing the conversion activity deletes the files that were just converted.

I know, but that cannot be done (now) - i was giving an alternative
Which going by his last post does exactly what he wants!
And yes a simple option to make the optimized the new original and delete the original would be great. And yes one would assume not overly difficult.

Does anyone else have a solution for this?
I do not think there is an easier way to do this.
It is not the purpose of Optimize.
Optimization is really just a background thing that happens and the new files sit there until needed.
It is not designed to convert the files then just use those files.

You maybe right but for me I convert/copy ALL my files to mp4 so an “inhouse” solution would be cool.
Just imagine - u just downloaded an avi or mkv and with a couple of clicks it gets copied/converted to mp4 and then old gets deleted all in their proper folder.
That’s what I am doing with a 3rd party converter and it takes many clicks!

Yes, that would a nice addition. Would definitely help in those situations.
I appreciate all of the advice and I will try the 3rd party conversion route as well. I have used DVDFab and Handbrake but I wasn’t sure of the settings. In a nutshell I’m looking to do some optimization to limit the amount of transcoding happening on the fly. Doesn’t optimizing help with that?
@spikemixture can you share your MediaCoder settings for Optimization that works for you? Having an established baseline I can tweak to suit my personal preference would be great.

I have moved on from Mediacoder.
Now MCEBuddy does my copying/remuxing/converting.
I have it set up to search (every hour or so) my TV folder where all my finished tv shows live.
It remuxes all my mkv to mp4 and converts my avi’s to mp4.
