Corrupt database, 3 day auto backup not working, solutions not "housewife friendly"

No criticism of housewives. I just need to gripe a bit. I woke up to a corrupted database. Lost all my tags, collections. All the solutions in these forums and on Reddit require too much time and energy for someone like me. SQLite? That github thing that really, really suggests we run it in Docker? Apparently, that’s a Linux thing. I have Windows. Deleting databases and restoring old versions just to find out that Plex’s 3 day automatic backup hasn’t run since March 9 despite having the box ticked. Solution? More command line BS. Why can’t Plex just make it work right? Or provide us with a tool that we can just install and hit run? Why do I have to go outside of the Plex company to get solutions?

No, it doesn’t. It aims for a multitude of platforms which all are able to run Plex server, among which are Docker and Linux, besides Windows.

If you are talking about this Github thing: PlexDBRepair/Windows at master · ChuckPa/PlexDBRepair · GitHub
then all you need to do is to download the single .bat file to your Windows computer and run it.
If you’re lucky, it can repair the corrupted DB without any further fiddling.

This is what your mean?

Db already rebuilt. Will try .bat, but it’s going to be discontinued in favor of Powershell version. Hopefully, that will be just as easy.

Do you think Plex will address the failure of 3 day auto backup?

FYI… This probably means your db is corrupt since 9th March. The scheduled task will only successfully create a backup if no corruption is found. This I’d say is preserve the last good db.

Can’t believe there’s no notification of this happening. I’ve seen way too many people in this forum whose last backup is a year old, and I always thought they goofed somehow. But I guess if Plex doesn’t notify you that the DB is corrupt, how are you supposed to know?

Plex Media Server can send notifications to the Plex mobile app.

Plex Media Server:
Settings → Server_Name → General. Enable Push Notifications.

Plex mobile app:
Settings → Notifications → Database Corruption Detected.

So I have to install an app with ads and in-app purchases on my phone which will take up Mbs and I won’t use just to be notified of a corrupt database. Why shouldn’t the actual server give us a pop-up or other notification?

I’m thinking the concept of a server maybe lost in translation. The server will seldom give notifications of itself, these are always “served” to the clients. The correct question maybe why aren’t the notifications severed to other clients? The answer would likely be the best client to serve it to would be a mobile device that is accustomed to receiving notifications… Just maybe…

I would suggest that these kinda of notifications be incorporated into Plex Dash? Seems like the perfect marriage. @aubrey.wodonga would that make sense?

You won’t see a single ad in there, as long as you only watch stuff from personal servers. (Either your own, or shared with you.)
If you disable the online media sources in your account, you won’t even accidentally stumble upon them: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/online-media-sources

The “in-app purchases” are mentioned because you can unlock the app with a one-time payment.
But you don’t need to do that anyway, because you already have the Plex pass, which unlocks all the apps.

Plex Dash? Yet another app? Why not just send a text to a phone or email without needing a special app? Isn’t there some sort of old tech that does that?
Makes me miss the tools and plugins we used to be able to install. I love that Plex is working on big things, but they still need to pay attention to the little things. Instead, we have to search forums and find our own solutions?

Is there any way to force Plex to start doing the 3 day auto backup again? It did one on June 16, but now I have to check every few days just to make sure and if it stops again, what do I do?

It will make backups when exporting the database won’t fail anymore.
i.e. after the corruption is repaired.

A corrupt database is a serious issue. It is not just an inconvenience, but it will inevitably lead to data loss if it’s not repaired.

Hope Chuck’s DB Repair was able to fix your DB.

In any case, I think I will go ahead and get this installed and enabled. I check my backup directory once or twice a year at the most. I even have cloud backup for that folder. But what good does that do if there’s no backup files  :joy:
