CPU advice for a new build

I’m going to be needing to do a new Plex Server Build, and was wondering if anyone know if the i7-12700 (not K) is compatible with Plex at this time. Someone had said they thought that it was not, so before I put out any cash for a new CPU, I want to make sure that what I get is going to work. I’m not sure what I’m going to get at this point, but that is what I would like to get.
Thanks.

The support page (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201774043-what-kind-of-cpu-do-i-need-for-my-server/) has some good rule of thumb information and links to passmark and CPU performance pages.

Okay, I’ll check it out. Thanks.

It doesn’t say anything about the i7-12700 and if it is compatible or not. Unless I missed it.

To the best of my knowledge, any modern/new CPU that has sufficient PassMarks can run PLEX with all the bells and whistles (assuming sufficient memory, bandwidth, etc)

The Intel Core i7-12700 has about double the PassMark score that PLEX requires
Description: Intel UHD Graphics 770
Socket: FCLGA1700
Total Cores: 12 Cores, 20 Threads
Performance Cores: 8 Cores, 16 Threads, 2.1 GHz Base, 4.9 GHz Turbo
Average CPU Mark rating 31236

Could you give details of where you heard that it wouldn’t work.

I had nothing close to such a new generation but even my old KabyLake was absolutely awesome with Plex.

HW acceleration via the graphics chip alone makes it worth it. So I’m just curious as to if whoever said it wouldn’t work knew of something specific to that particular CPU. If not I would jump in.
Generally though modern Intels are awesome for Plex.

There may be some confusion with running Plex on Linux with Alder Lake CPUs.

There is an issue with Ubuntu Linux and Alder Lake (12th gen) CPUs.

The default Linux kernel (5.15) that ships with Ubuntu does not fully support Alder Lake. Several additions have been added to the 5.18 and 5.19 kernels to better support Alder Lake.

Plex is also working to support updated Intel GPU drivers on Linux (Intel Compute Runtime Libraries) to better support Alder Lake CPUs.

Thanks @FordGuy61

But on Windows the OP should be fine?

A guy on reddit wrote this comment.
I might be wrong, but I don’t think Alder Lakes GPU’s are fully supported in Plex yet. At least, I seem to recall hearing that at some point recently.
I’m sure he meant CPUs because that is what the discussion was about, and not GPUs.
That is why I was asking is all. I want to make sure before I do anything like purchase this $2.50 item. :slightly_smiling_face:

AFAIK, Windows 11 + Alder Lake is OK.

Caveat is that I run Plex on Linux and do not follow the server-windows section closely.

I did a quick search of server-windows and did not see any major red flags.

Also, note that HDR → SDR tonemapping is not well supported on Windows.

See HDR to SDR Tone Mapping

It will hit the CPU, even when using hardware acceleration for transcoding the video.

I have not seen any reference info regarding PassMark ratings, etc for tonemapping.

Here’s a thread on the topic. The i5-11320H has a PassMark score of 10720:
