Server upgrade and dedicated to Plex

Finally ready to pull the trigger on a dedicated Plex server setup as referenced in this thread: (Recommendations on new CPU)

While I am going with a new Alder Lake i9 CPU and supporting components for my main PC upgrade, I decided to make the guts of the current rig (below) a dedicated Plex server running Ubuntu. My only change would be to pull out the Nvidia card and use the i7 w/Quick Sync to handle HDR transcoding as needed.

  • Intel Core i7-8700 @ 3.2GHz w/GPU and QuickSync
  • ASUS PRIME Z370-A LGA1151
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz
  • Nvidia GTX 1070

I am wondering if there are any issues with this processor because of age in terms of handling the transcoding. Everything I read is that this setup in Linux should be lightyears beyond what I am getting in Windows 10/11.

Run your i7-8700 with Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS (Ubuntu server works very well) and you’ll get a lot of mileage out of it.

I have i7-8809G NUCs which deliver a solid 600 Mbps of video transcoding (when needed).
