Crackling when playing Atmos ThueHD 7.1 Content

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 10.4.0.4843

I purchased an Nvidia Shield TV Pro due to the Apple TV not being able to support Atmos

I have a issue when playing Dolby Atmos content on this.

When ever there is atmos playback using the Plex app there is a intermittent crackle that occurs.
I have tried atmos content on other apps and there has been no issue, it’s solely on the Plex app

I have the “Passthrough” setting set to “HDMI”, I can’t really see any other setting that might help resolve this

I have the exact same issue with the tube shield.
I thought maybe hardware acceleration would help so I purchased a Plex pass but it made no difference.
Both video and audio direct play but TrueHD 7.1 streams will intermittently crackle which is very annoying.
The video plays smoothly with no frame drops.
Am connected via ethernet with gigabit speed so network is not a factor.
Have messed around with heaps of settings within the shield and in Plex suggested elsewhere but nothing works.
The same files play flawlessly in Kodi so it’s definitely a Plex issue.

Which Soundbar are you using? Just curious.

I am also getting this issue using the Samsung HW-Q990C + Nvidia Shield TV Pro with the appropriate settings enabled.

Something else I’ve noticed, is that once it crackles/cuts out once, Plex Dashboard/Tautuilli/Etc will not recognize that anything is playing and increases server device CPU usage by a lot (no Transcoding).

I’m using the Sonos Arc with Sonos Era 300’s for surrounds

Sonos Arc

Does the issue happen for you guys if you play the movie and do not pause/fast forward/rewind?

I watched most of an atmos film without issue, until I rewound it 10 seconds, then the crackle came

QUICK EDIT:

UPDATE: Issue seemingly resolved for me! Using LG G3 OLED for reference.

There is an additional setting in the LG Sound settings in addition to the eARC HDMI passthrough settings.

It’s ‘Digital Sound Output’. When settings this to ‘Pass Through’ instead of ‘Auto’ I no longer receive crackling at all!

After changing this setting in TV settings, the Shield somehow just lost the video setting to include Dolby Vision. Re-enabled. Now getting TrueHD Atmos + Vision without any issues or crackling! Fast Forwarding did not break it either  Though it does trigger the TV to display the Dolby Atmos notifier again as it used to do when it would cut out…

Also: Dash/Tautulli properly listing them as Now Playing as well

Anyone with similar setup/TV able to test on their end?

EDIT 2: Now, when playing lesser Atmos streams (E-AC3, whatever) the TV doesn’t list Atmos in the top right corner like it used to, but the soundbar display still recognizes Atmos as playing.

So not sure what’s going on with that aspect

I tried changing the Digital Sound output from auto to pass through (Samsung The Frame tv) and yes, it fixed the crackle issue, however now the sound completely cuts out for a couple of seconds intermittently… Will have to test with a few more movies to see if it’s consistent
