4K Support

  • tvOS11.0 supports HEVC not just the ATV4K.
  • AppleTV 4th Generation supports software decoding of HEVC.
  • AppleTV 4K supports hardware decoding of HEVC.

tvOS.xml Profile Does Not Reflect Release Announcements:

  • Release notes do not make any distinction between ATV4 and ATV4K.
  • tvOS.xml profile does not include any mention of FLAC, h264, 4K resolution, or 10-bit content.

Version 1.18:

  • Added support for direct playback of FLAC music on tvOS 11.
  • Added support for 4K video playback on the Apple TV 4K.

Version 1.19:

  • Add direct play support for HEVC video codec.

For ATV4K:
tvOS.xml should include:

  • Line 21 to include flac
  • Line 28 “video.width” value=“3840”
  • Line 29 “video.height” value=“2160”
  • Line 30 “video.bitDepth” value=“10”
  • line 16 to include h265

For ATV4:

  • Line 21 to include flac
  • line 16 to include h265

Understandably software decoding has its limitations. If the Plex developers are concerned with the ability of the Apple A8 chip to software decode HEVC, then they should limit the supported resolution for HEVC on the ATV4 to 720p. More advanced users can alter the tvOS.xml profile for 1080p content and will do so with the understanding that performance may suffer depending on the bitrate of their HEVC content.
