Currently, it seems that the only way to get a custom smart playlist based on individual track grouping is filtering by “Track Title”
All other filters are larger in scope (Album and Artist filters). There is the “Track Mood” filter, but unfortunately this is not imported from mp3 files.
This seems to be a big limitation for smart playlists.
Here is a specific case in point:
One album contains mostly “Easy Listening” tracks, but several are best categorized as “Classical” within that album. I want to create a smart “Classical” playlist from files that have been already tagged individually for this. In iTunes/Music there is the “Grouping” field that can be used to group by individual tracks, but in Plex, there seems to be no alternative.
I can use Mp3tag to transfer the “Grouping” tag to another tag (like “track Mood”) that Plex would recognize. However, there seems to be no other tag that can be imported into Plex and attached to specific tracks.
Am I correct? Is there something I’m missing?
Seems like a very basic feature, but not possible with Plex.
If I understand you correct you are trying to achieve the same as me.
Style tag (grouping field in the file) are indeed not read from the files.
All my albums and artists are now tagged according to Discogs: 15 Main genres and sub categories of styles.
Unfortunately when I select Classical I get the whole list of Styles, which should be filtered obviously with only the Classical Styles (Please add this correct filtering Elan )
I set the Mood field with a small set of Moods, for example:
Sunday Morning, Friends, Party, Melancholy, Late Night, Dinner, Summer Evening.
(Some are Occasions in fact, but can’t think of a better way)
A lot of work, especially because I can’t edit Mood fields in Plexamp and have to do this in Plex.
(Please add edit this possibility Elan )
James, thanks, this is helpful. How exactly is that script run? Is that something that would be run from the Terminal?

So are you saying it actually still does not work as expected?
Yes, you run the script from the terminal.
Not very difficult, but the script uses for example the mutagen which has to be installed.

Well, it runs as expected, the Genres and Styles list are compact (of course there are leftovers, not everything is found on Discogs, but that is easy to solve).
But filtering is not how is should work and what you should expect. If I list all the Artists of Genre Classical, I expect the Style list to be populated with the Classical styles, like Opera, Modern, Baroque, Choral, Oratorio or whatever. But it gives me the whole list of Styles. .
In addition: Plex should read the styles from the files itself.
Yes, that is hopefully something which will be added in the future.
Artist and Album Genre and Style level of course is needed, but it is not fine grained enough. Therefor I adding the Mood to the track, but that route is a bit of pain because you can’t edit it in Plexamp.
Don’t know if there are music managers out there which have this.
The other one I use (Roon) does not have it too.
