Music Tags - Genre Tagging Question

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2935
Player Version#: Not Relevent

Hi Folks. I am a little confused about the tagging of music.
I just did a search for ‘Ska’ on my server and one of the search options
was ‘Genres in Music’
So I selected that and got the message “The active filter has no matches”. So I checked that the tags were in place in the MP3 files and asked the server to reload the metatags.
Still nothing found, so I went to the actual files to add the Ska Genre tag manually.
However when I click on Tags, all I get is '‘Moods’ and not genre.
Obviously I have a setting wrong somewhere.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as how to set this up?

Thanks for all that - will explore it all later.
However, one question. If Plex only searches for the word Ska in the title of the album, why does it give you the option to search for ‘Genres in Music’ ?
And ALL my Ska tracks have Ska as their genre.

Ok, I have obviously confused every one!
This is what i am doing

  1. Search for Ska in the top search option.
  2. From the drop down list of found items I select Ska in music from Genres. :-

3) Thats when I get the no matches.

As just about every one of my library of over 50,0000 mp3’s is correctly tagged with the complete tag and I have around 500 tracks with ‘Ska’ as the genre information, that is why I am assuming that that I must have a setting wrong somewhere.

Here’s an example:-

Nope it doesn’t come up as a genre - I only get around 15 genres coming up in Plex.
(On Virtual DJ with the same MP3 files it finds over 60 genres)
Hence me thinking I must have a setting wrong somewhere on Plex for it not to see all the genre’s embedded in the MP3’s.

Me Too!
Hence my first question of how to force Plex to assign a genre to a track.

The mystery thickens - I have just checked a few Ska albums and they ALL: have ‘Ska’ as their genre in Plex

Genre becomes much less important now, because Plex uses very few, very broad Genres. (i.e. almost all of my library is getting “Pop/Rock”).
Instead, they are using “Styles” from allmusic.com

Now, it all depends how your music library is set up.
Edit your music library, go to the Advanced tab and scroll down to ‘Genres’.
You can set this to ‘Embedded Tags’ if you want the Genre tags from your files to take precendence over Styles.

But this will also only influence the Genre of albums.
I am not aware of a metatag for Genre of the Artist.

The availability of “Styles Radio” in Plexamp is directly depending on the setting of this drop-down selector.

All of the above is only valid if you use ‘Plex Music’ for both Agent and Scanner in your music library.

I am not interested in a genre for an artist or an album TBH, just on a track by track basis based on the MP3 tag so will try changing the genre setting as you suggest.

However, am not why you say Genres isn’t important - that’s how I listen to music. EG Today I want Rock, or today I want Reggae. I wasn’t aware of 'Styles in the MP3 tag.

Just did a search on All Music for three random artists and all three styles came back as Pop/Rock as opposed to their genre which certainly isn’t that that!
Rammstein, Hawkwind and David Bowie - All of which have completely different genres, but Allmusic says they are all Pop/rock.
Just found that AllMusic also classes The Wurzels as the same style as Motorhead!

Plex simply doesn’t do that, yet.

Now I am the confused one.
Are you saying that Plex doesn’t read genres? So where does the genre tag come from ?
Are you saying we have to manually add the Genre tag to every album individually?
That can’t be right surely?

Plex doesn’t support Genre per-track, yet.
When it reads the tracks of an album, it will combine all the different genres from the tracks and put them onto the ‘album’ record instead.

Ah right so one album can have several Genres attached to it. Now that makes sense.
EG a Police album may have the Rock and Reggae genres attached to it.

Well my server is scanning all my albums now so in an hour or so,hopefully I should a lot more genres.

This still isn’t working.
I have change the setting to read genre from the MP3 Tags.
I have searched for “Trance” under Genre and again nothing game up - even though I have loads of albums with “Trance” as their genre.:-

Album Genre tag:-

I think I have to delete my music library and start again.

You were searching for Trance as the artist genre.
You need to set your library view mode to ‘Albums’. Or use the Custom Filters.

Ok, I think I am starting to understand.
Will have a proper look when I am not at work. ( :slightly_smiling_face:)
Crikey it’s complicated isn’t it!
