Crop Widescreen Borders/Zoom/Aspect Ratio // mod: change aspect ratio to fit content on screen

Hi Folks,

It would be nice if we could have a feature on the following clients which allows the Zoom, cropping of the Black borders on films on the following clients.

Android Client and Roku Client.

Is this something that could be considered?

Thanks

I will join this request for cropping black bars in movies when using plex app on PS4!

Please add this essential feature.

This is a must have and it’s very easy to implement.

The Android, Roku, and PS4 apps (all Plex apps in fact, except PHT) use the default media player of that respective device.  Any playback features need to be added by that vendor for it to work with the Plex App.  Nothing Plex can do about it unless they were to write their own media player and integrate it into each app.  I have no idea if this is something Plex is even considering.

In that case I’m hopping ps4 team will get the player as they did with PS3, Probably 2015… Well I’ll keep on waiting. This is a must have feature for me. I will check to see if it works on my ps3 and will update, I know ps3 player has that option.

Thanks

Note that not all features available in Sony apps was made available to 3rd party apps, so it still might not work.

Since your PS3 is connected to a TV, your TV should also have that function.

Shouldn’t this be done serverside? When the server is transcoding to optimize viewing and add subtitles, this should be a simple addition. Even when the mkv has embedded instructons to crop (see https://forums.plex.tv/topic/119493-plex-creates-black-borders/) it doesn’t respect them. Being able to tune the MKV in that way and have the Plex Media Server handle the rest would be the way to go for me…

Yes it could be done server-side.  I believe there was a similar request before when some clients could not handle anamorphic files.  The request quickly faded.  You can try a new feature request and see if it picks up steam again.

Although according to that other thread, supporting that cropping flag did not appear to be common among other media players so something like that would probably be a very lower priority to the devs.

Maybe I am dense but I do not really understand what is being asked for here.

1. Is it that the black borders on 4:3 content displayed on a 16:9 screen be eliminated by distorting the 4:3 video to fill a 16:9 screen?

2. Is it when when 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 or some such videos are played they should be stretched vertically to eliminate the bars at the top and bottom?

3. Is it that the image should be zoomed so that any bars are eliminated by keeping the aspect ratio and simply making the image larger and moving some content off the screen?

4. Or is it something else entirely?

If it is any of the first three that seems a bad idea as it either loses content or distorts the image. But in any case that functionality. if desired, would really belong at the display level.

If it is #4 I would like it more fully explained as I am always open to extending my understanding.

Sort of all of the above.  You need to read the OPs other post to understand it, if you have not already.

He has black bars embedded into his video in an mkv container.  The mkv has a flag to crop portions of the file.  PMS does not recognize that flag and displays it as is.  OP is looking for PMS to read those flags to remove the bars and show the remaining zoomed to fit the screen of whatever is requesting the video.

I'd really like to see this as well, specifically with the web app. I have anamorphic content, but it's 4:3 instead of 16:9. The plex home theater app is great in this regard, however it's a lot more convenient for me to use the web app.

Having a library with some movies with black borders on all sides, I’d love to see this feature. When I used to use Windows Media Center I used this a lot. Now that I’m a Plex fanboy I’m missing the feature.

Hi

I Keep going on about this on the Plex FaceBook and don’t seem to get anywhere!

I Don’t understand what the issue is nor understand why.

Why in Kodi is there a option to play 4:3 in say 16:9, I have tested This on Kodi side loaded on Apple Tv4 and it works like a dream. I have played the original DVD and looked at the difference between Kodi filling it to 16:9 and the DVD player doing what it does and there is NO Difference. So i am going to ask AGAIN Why you won’t give us the Option to Change the Aspect Ratio in Plex! I Am a PlexPass holder and have spent many years Ripping and Encoding my DVD & Bluray collection have a purpose built Dual Xeon Power server i built running UnRaid soley to use Plex as its So Great. It pisses me off that i might as well put the DVD in the player and watch it than on Plex! Please Please can someone tell me Why you won’t give us this basic feature Quite a few people want before i just Remove flex totally and use Kodi… I also have over 20 family members all over the world streaming from my Plex so its a last resort as they have all brought the iOS Or Android app etc so i don’t want to have to do this. i may even start a pole to see just how many users would welcome this feature

Thanks

In many, in fact most, cases I am very much in favor of choice but in this case I think not. Movies and TV shows should be viewed in the format they were shot/distributed in and if the digital form on the server does not display correctly then that should be fixed by proper encoding of the video.

If on the other hand it is displaying correctly and someone wants to view it stretched or squashed or otherwise distorted then that is their absolute right and the display device they are using is what should make the adjustment.

It is NOT in Plex’s purview to alter the video but rather it is Plex’s job to provide a properly formatted/decoded stream to the display device.

This is one case where it is wrong for Plex to place code in the server or the client(s) to give the user choice. This choice belongs in the display device. Just because some other program does it neither makes it right or a good idea.

I’ve requested this feature please see https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/230927/remove-black-bars#latest

This here is already a feature request - in the ‘Feature Request’ subforum.

Most of the media I have is in widescreen, but I still have some movies (for example, all 3 of my BTTF movies) that are in full screen (4:3 aspect ratio). I hate watching content in full screen (unless I’m watching on a CRT), but luckily my flatscreen has a feature that stretches the movie to fill the whole screen. However, I still have a bunch of other devices that I watch my media on (most notably my phone). I was wondering if an option could be added that stretches out the movie to fill the whole screen.

I’m not sure how much support you’re going to get for a feature that warps the video image by stretching it out.

This is kind of like a modern version of asking for fullscreen DVD’s that chopped off the sides of the image with pan&scan instead of going with the widescreen versions. You’re not really warping the image with fullscreen, so that is different.

Fair point, but I don’t really care that much about warping. The movie always ends up looking just fine to me.
And most (if not all) of my fullscreen DVDs are just left over from the earlier days of DVD where widescreen wasn’t as big of a thing, and I don’t want to spend the extra money required to replace them with widescreen ones. (Or, in the case of BTTF, the box says it’s widescreen but the guy at the used video store put in fullscreen discs. And I didn’t find out until after I got home and ripped them to my server. Sucks, but I got all 3 on sale for $5, so I really shouldn’t complain about it.)

I believe there is an option in PMP that does exactly what you are asking for which does a non-linear stretch to resolve the issue that Ericbazinga stated.

Kodi/SPMC also has this feature.

There may, but I don’t use PMP or Kodi. I want the feature added to the Android app. (I use an Nvidia SHIELD to watch Plex content on my flatscreen, and I also use an Android phone.)
