Current status of Nvidia HW decode on Linux?

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2457
Player Version#: 4.26.1

I’m a bit confused if Nvidia hw decode has been added officially on Linux or is just in beta. I am using docker through PGBlitz/PlexGuide so I’m not sure if that’s why I only can get hw encode working and not decode. I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

plex linux nvidia hw decode was released on beta @ Plex Media Server 1.17.0.1709

if your server is newer than 1.17.0.1709, then HW should be available.

dockers complicate things, perhaps you should try plex on baremetal, confirm it does or does not work there first.

otherwise, I would suggest you either open a new thread or edit the OP title and provide a lot more details about your hardware, os, docker config, and including logs from pms reproducing the problem.

Thanks a lot. I installed it bare metal now to see if that’s any help. HW encoding works immediately just by enabling it in the menu. Before I go through and grab all the info you requested, is there anything I’m meant to do to enable decoding? Old threads mention the Nvidia patches and tweaks but it seems those are not needed anymore, or am I wrong?

Spoke too soon. On another video it works just fine. Thank you!

To avoid any further confusion,

  • Nvidia GPU support is production status
  • Nvidia GPU driver installation on Linux is the customer responsibility.
  • Nvidia GPU drivers are available from the QNAP App Center on those models which support it.
