Custom filters on other client apps in addition to Plex Web App // mod: now "advanced filters"

The custom filter feature on Plex Web App is great. With it I can readily identify all my titles with two or more actors–and filter out the “That’s Entertainment I-II-III” documentaries or anything other than real movie titles. For instance: if I want to show when Clark Gable and Jeanette MacDonald appeared together in a film, I run a custom filter, and it identifies San Francisco.

Now: why can’t I do that on Plex for Android or Plex for Roku?

I just installed six TCL Roku TV’s in my new home. I’d love to be able to run a custom filter using the Plex server to select a title just as easily as with Plex Web App–without having to hook up a computer to the TV to do it.

I already know it would take longer to set a custom filter on a device with input limited to a few button presses or touches-and-swipes. Still, I’m sure anyone could learn to set one up. You give the user a special screen, and have the user select one rule at a time. The “Title Contains/Does Not Contain” filter would take a little longer, because you have to navigate a hunt-and-peck character display. But the “Actor Is/Is Not”, “Genre Is/Is Not”, “Director Is/Is Not”, and other rules should be a cinch to add. Then when you have all your rules, you click an Apply button at the bottom, and presto–a limited set of movie titles meeting your criteria, from which you can make a more intelligent selection.
