Dd True HD & dts MA on TCL Roku tv

Hi all, I just got the tcl 55r635 tv which can pass these hi-res audio formats via eARC. Playing an mkv file with this audio I cannot get my receiver to display these formats. I only get Dolby digital. I believe the Plex app on this TV is transcoding the audio. I cannot find what settings to use. Can anyone suggest anything?

Earc appears to only work with hdmi devices, like Blu-ray players and external streamers like nvidia shield.

Earc does NOT appear to work with any built in tv software apps.

Thanks. Is there any documentation of this? Where is the limitation? The plex app? The tv?

You are welcome.

The only documentation that I am aware of is that no one of the thousands of plex users has found an E-ARC tv that will pass hd audio via built in app.

You (or anyone else) are free to prove me wrong, I would welcome it, and I am sure many others would love to find the perfect tv that does not need any other external device.

My belief is that the hdmi e-arc spec applies ONLY to physically connected HDMI devices, which does not apply to built in software apps, so that would mean the limitation is the hdmi/e-arc spec.

Until some manufacturer creates a tv that can utilize e-arc via app, we are all screwed.

this thread @ [INFO] Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k may (or may not) be of use to you, there is a whole ton of discussion regarding 4k and plex. Please read the entire thread.

Thanks, I’ll give it a look. I can’t wrap my brain around it. Plex is an app - whether it is on the tv or the shield, it’s not hardware. The Shield can pass ddthd and dtsma. If the tv is cable of passings it why wouldn’t it work? (Asking myself)
Unless the apps are different per device or the TCL rep was incorrect and tv can’t pass them. We will see after rtings reviews the set i guess.

think of it this way.

E-ARC is an HDMI protocol extension

that means HDMI link to HDMI link

not software to HDMI

HDMI uses encryption and other handshaking protocols to attempt to ensure that people can’t copy content.

this is likely why it has not been done in software, because there is hardware encryption being done between the 2 hdmi hardware devices connection points.

now, that does not mean it may be impossible to do, just that no manufacturer has, at least to anyone’s public knowledge.
