Default All Clients to Max Internet Streaming

If somebody told you about a problem back in 2017, would you sit there with your thumb up your ass till 2021?

@eygraber You are correct, however the scope of this issue shouldn’t be so complex that in 2021 we’re still defaulting to 720p. This could have easily been handled a very long time ago.

Edit: It is my firm belief that it’s simply been deprioritized.

I can’t say over what, but I imagine it relates to making money. Whether it’s integrating with major streaming platforms as a Plex Pass perk or something else entirely, I cannot say.

I’m an engineering team lead (not at Plex)
As much as I like to think along the lines of the above few comments, I know from actual experience that what seems like a simple solution isn’t always. There could be extenuating circumstances that we don’t know, or it could just be getting deprioritized.

I get similar comments from my users sometimes, and it’s not always that cut and dry. Definitely hurts to hear it, even if I don’t take it personally. Sometimes it’s entirely out of my control. Just the way things go sometimes.

This :point_up_2: .
I have similar experience to @eygraber and can second this perspective. I want this fixed too but also know that behind the scenes it’s always more complicated that it appears.

Having said that - a real, tangible ETA and official information about a related change/fix I think would go a long way.

So much this. :point_up_2: Even a quick explanation of WHY this is taking so long would be amazing so that we have an understanding of any technical hurdles that the engineers may be facing.

Looking in from the outside, Plex just doesn’t seem to care. No effort on providing an ETA, explanation of why this is so hard to tackle, etc.

At this point I’m just waiting for client parity for Jellyfin.

I love Plex and I’ll say it again: I REALLY want them to succeed. However, we all deserve more than “we like to hold our cards close”.

Well OK, then.

We’ve finished implementing on the initial target platform (Apple TV) and are doing internal testing. When we have it in a place we like it, we’ll open up for wider testing and move onto other platforms (getting it solid on one platform first helps subsequent platforms).

If you don’t think we care about this problem or personally deal with it, you’re just wrong.

All I can do is speculate. It’s pretty easy to see how we might feel that way. Look around you.

You’ve said previously that you have to deal with this, too. I honestly applaud you for suffering through it for so long as well.

I, like many others, are just surprised that it likely won’t be resolved until 2021 despite this being a longstanding issue.

Edit: Also, thank you on the update. This tells me that it isn’t far off. I imagine at some point in 2021. Personally hoping for Q1 but I’d be happy if it is fixed at any point in 2021. Better late than never.

Edit2: Not to mention, some people spend a LOT of money on running a server, especially when doing it all by the book. That doesn’t even account for the cost of storage, redundancy, and backups. It’s a shame to put so much into it for everyone to transcode to 720p.

Hopefully you can understand why we all get upset about stuff like this. Lack of communication just makes us feel like nothing is being done.

Please also keep in mind that there are employees active in this thread (I last posted 14 days ago), but it is a holiday period, and many folks are taking much needed and deserved time away from work and with their families. :plexheart:

I understand completely. I am just very outspoken and frustrated like many other users.

I hope nobody takes my posts to heart and hope all of you have had a safe and happy Holiday.

If that ever happens, it’ll be the single largest migration of users from one thing to another in the history of the world.

It would seriously be a huge deal. Especially with the clients all being open source as well.

Yep. If.

I like Plex a lot, I pay money to the company to support it but man am I frustrated. Not only with this issue, but with so so soooooo many other issues too,
The Software is in a bad state, so much friction, so exhausting.

I wished Jellyfin was there, but it is not and judging from the last year of development it will not be there within 5 years minimum. They lack developers and sadly, it shows. It is in a horrible state, server-wise and client-wise. With very little client apps.
But at least seeking works properly… hint hint plex, fix seeking already

Anyhow, as much as I would like it to be, jellyfin won’t be an option short to medium term.

Academic at this point.

A Conversation Starter for those family and friends we haven’t seen in 2 years + - and we’ll need to have that conversation via email, texts, or conference call - 'cause on this Planet we’re sure not spending any well deserved time with them over the holidays - that much is certain.

Looks like you’ve got the one you care about in the house with you. Lucky man.

Mine are spread out behind cascading click walls, and other obstacles erected to keep us from killing one another by giving them a virus - or getting one.

There is one absolute truth.

The closer something else gets to being a viable alternative to Plex - Plex better be forming huge beads of sweat on their foreheads over it 'cause they’re gonna find out how loyal these Users of theirs are and how in love they are with all the obstacles Plex is baking in to every app they develop.

Nobody on Earth would EVER use a Plex app - if there was a good one out there to use in it’s place. Right now, we’re a captive audience. Unfortunately.

Happy New Year, and you as well.

Try not to let our frustrations get to you. Enjoy your time with your family and come back to work feeling refreshed. Thanks again for the update.

Very happy to see this. Hopefully Android isn’t too far behind.
Hoping 2021 brings lots of good improvements. :tada:

Any update?

Nothing further at the moment, but we’re continuing to work on this, and will open it up for wider testing as soon as it’s ready.

Hello,
As I was able to increase my WAN bandwidth as of recent, I thought I could increase an adjust my Plex settings accordingly to allow users to utilize the new added bandwidth. I made the adjustments on my Plex server (Web Player and over all global speed settings). To my surprise there was no change for remote users.
I then went poking around the net to see if I could find anything on this topic and came here, to this thread that has many users looking for the same changes and/or have been unsuccessful.

So +1x1000 to this thread post, there should be more ability to control and utilize the bandwidth being used for plex that way users can experience remote content playback without losing quality as the changes I made on my server reflected nothing to what I have available for the users to use.

Sounds like R&D is on the case over at Plex, so fingers crossed something comes out of this.

On another related note, I wish plex had some method to backup metadata to one files (without all the graphics, pictures, media files) just metadata on watched/unwatched (database data). That would be very handy.

That’s all I got for now.

Thank you!

A little off-topic but look at this file:

/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases/com.plexapp.plugins.library.db

That should have all the data you want.

There’s a button in the web UI that does exactly that.
Server Settings --> Troubleshooting
