this plex inc for you. dont care about what their core users want nor listen to them. What a joke of a company this is. no wonder why linus is not working with them no more. ahh and dont get me started on their syncing feature. btw emby has let admins determine deafut play behavior for ages now.
Ironically enough, there is a problem with the default quality settings in Downloads and iOS clients, you always have to change “Download Format” to “Original” otherwise your downloads will be mostly transcoded (and most times the transcode fails). This has been reported since long time ago and as usual it has been ignored.
Maybe I am not patient enough, it took four years to fix the issue with default quality and Internet Streaming, maybe I just have to wait a few years more for the default settings in Downloads to be changed.
The sad thing is plenty of people complain Downloads do not work under iOS are many of them are probably just having this problem, but Plex decides to ignore the issue and keep their customers unhappy.
@DaveBinM thank you for good communication with users and some good news finally.
2 cents from my side.
- Did you consider to not prompt user for quality upgrade only prompt for downgrade? Upgrade should be auto if network allows it.
- Can this auto mechanism be disabled and set quality to max always?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, it can.
I have another Shield that does not have the new option. There is really something going on. Some android clients have it, some don’t. Can you please help here?
I’ll look into it on our end, and see what’s going on. It should be available to all Android TV devices now.
We did consider that, but we wanted users to have control, and just in case our estimations are not correct. Max quality is the default. You’d only be prompted to downgrade if you cannot play at the original quality.
Wonderful to finally see progress on this. Hope it rolls out to other clients soon as well.
Any chance of this getting a wider roll out soon? We’ve already waited multiple years, and it’s super frustrating to still not have access on Apple devices.
It will be coming to other clients in future, but I can’t provide an ETA, I’m afraid.
Is it a ‘this year thing’ or an ‘in the coming years’ thing?
I can’t provide any more clarity on that than I already have.
I understand but that’s very frustrating
Were you able to find anything on this?
Nothing else I can share at the moment, but we will be changing how it’s released to ensure it gets to everyone.
Ok. So does that mean that you acknowledge that there is a deployment issue?
It’s a complete joke that it’s now 2023 and at least once a week I still have to call or text family members and friends to tell them they’re transcoding and to change the setting. I am so completely sick of it. Having 720p 4mbps as the default because “that’s what it’s always been” or whatever other crap is an absurdity. Every single streaming service on the planet defaults to original quality and goes down from there as necessary.
enjoy
just go with trust old cloudflare plex header writing, cus that’s worked for the past 3-4 years and surely will work the next 4-5 years while we wait for this feature
this is what i made 3-5 years ago when i was fed up. GitHub - zmike808/Plex-Blackmagic: A cloudflare worker for plex that uses blackmagic to change default client bitrates!
@DaveBinM I even tried reinstalling (uninstall and install) the Plex client on my Nvidia Shield and the feature is still not there!!!
