Default language by library and series

I have many series that I want to exclusively have played in a certain language, but the rest I want in English. They are in separate libraries, but it’s annoying to have to change the audio track everytime I try to play an episode.

Thank you for making this request! I completely agree we need a way to control language on the library or series level.

I think the workaround is setting up separate user accounts with different language defaults. But switching users adds a lot of friction to the plex viewing experience :D.

Currently there is only the global setting?

I think both points are valid.

Each user should have a own setting. E.g. my kids and wife prefer to watch in their native language.
On the other hand I prefer to watch films, series in the original language, if I can understand it.

@kyrias does that cover you needs?

Implementation like I would do:

  • User X has a list of languages which he can understand.
  • There is a flag called preferNativeLanguage
  • If the flag is true Plex checks if the DB information for the orginal language is available.
  • If yes it compares it with the users list. If there an audio track which matches the original language and the language is in the users list it will be used. If there is no match the first available audio track will be used
  • If the flag is false we have the current behavior.

Example:
User A: 1st English, 2nd German; pefereNativeLanguage yes
User B: 1st English, 2nd German; pefereNativeLanguage no
User C: German; pefereNativeLanguage no

Movie 1: Original Language English, English and German available
Movie 2: Original Language German, English and German available

Tracks would be selected as:
User A, Movie 1: English
User A, Movie 2: German
User B, Movie 1: English
User B, Movie 2: English
User C, Movie 1: German
User C, Movie 2: German

For subtitles we could/should have a separate flag.

I am in too, it is a bit annoying to always change language on the same shows.

Bumping again. I describe my own issue here, in this similar Feature Request thread. This item was more about persistent selections on auto play for continuous episodes, at least after the first episode was manually selected:

I think multiple language preferences is better, and setting by Libray or even individual Series/Movie would be amazing.

I’d like to see such a feature as well; my problem isn’t so much selecting the right language but for some reason, every recorded programme has the audio stream with audio description selected by default.

All my programmes are recorded with 2 audio streams:

  • English - MP2 Stereo (this is the stream with audio descriptions)
  • nar - AC3 Stereo

Right, now I have to edit every single recording and change the language to “nar”
