Default Quality 4mb 720P

I am having an issue where the 360 is defaulting to 4mb 720p.

It lets me change via A and moving to change the quality.

Any suggestions?

I have the same behavior.  The server settings on the main page would be the logical place to change something like that but all it really has is an option to log out.

I have the same question, is this intended behaviour?

Same issue here only able to change the quality by selecting it and choosing max and then resets again on next episode so have to repeat it evey time needs to be switched to max by default imo

I am also having a hard time telling if it is streaming from my home network or plex.tv

Same issue here.  I've also seen an issue after forcing it to max quality; the video will play for a minute or two and then I get a disconnection error.  Seems to work fine if I leave it on 4Mbps/720p.  I've got a roku 3 in the same space as my xbox which plays fine at full quality, and both are using wireless.

Connected Wired via a Gigabit network I can select the Max Quality setting on my Xbox 360. I would love to make that the default setting but I do not know how... Any help would be appreciated.

Connected Wired via a Gigabit network

Doesn't really matter with the 360 since it is only a 10/100 NIC in it.

Anyone figure it out, other than changing on a per movie basis?

Since the X360 has known limitations, 100 Mb interface being one of them, I think the default limits are what is best for stability and viewing pleasure.

If I remember correctly the Xbox 360 renders at a max 720p and upscales 720p to 1080p. Also all Xbox 360 has wireless g and 10/100 lan so 4mbps is best for stability. Tbh I really do not see any quality issues using default settings

Really the 360 is only 720p resolution? That's awful. I was hoping it would make a viable replacement for my HTPC, but after running into the issues mentioned in this thread (especially where max quality causes it to disconnect) I think it's back to the HTPC.

At any rate, it seems that plex on the 360 doesn't pass Dolby TrueHD or DTS (neither regular nor DTS-HD.) Is this a limitation of the xbox, or is it just the app doesn't support it yet?

Wrong, full 1080p has been supported over HDMI, component and VGA since a firmware update in October 2006. 1080p movies play fine over either LAN or Wireless through DNLA. Why Microsoft imposed the limitations for Plex is anyone's guess, but transcoding just about everything to a very low quality is crazy, when DNLA plays just about everything without transcoding.

ok here is some information for you reguarding the video and audio codex of the xbox 360 and should clear up some miss information/expectaions of the performance of the xbox 360

Tests on the xbox 360 i performed few years ago (also just finished tests today, all done on a moded xbox 360 using latest firmware using custom debuging tools i made myself). i have various video test files from 800x600 to 1920x1080 from 2Mbps to 50Mbps in the supported formats as listed above, tests where performed using the system video player playing files from USB drive

Microsoft states that the xbox 360 plays video at a max 1920x1080 @30fps (respective of the correct format) this is in fact correct so i apologize for my previous miss information, after finishing my tests today i noticed a difference of my tests a few years ago. However it has to match the correct profile as stated above

in regards to audio, i have read complaints about Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD is not supported on the xbox 360 app, I know that the xbox 360 does not support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. the xbox 360 does support DTS, Microsoft states that it supports "playback of DTS 5.1 (such as films) by passing the encoded DTS digital bitstream to an external DTS decoder" however i have not got a proper test file to test this.

as for settings for video quality, anything above 15Mbps is useless for the xbox 360 and with the issues people are having with getting disconnected when setting the quality to "Maximum" could be due to the native support of the xbox 360. Microsoft does stat that it does not block video based on the maximum bit rate mentioned above for each codec but playback will be less optimal. This could cause the disconnect issue people are having with setting quality to maximum. i am not sure what plex is transcoding to so i cant really comment fully on this however, last night i have been able to watch 4 movies in a row with no issue at 15Mbps

Please note that the tests that i done was done via usb and on a moded xbox 360 and not via the plex app or DLNA

yeah i appologise about that, as mentioned above i corrected this, i didnt see this post when i was typing my reply. i think the default low quality is based on the plex app and wish that we can change the global default but i think it is probably to get a sable working setting first so that the devs can get more info from users before updating. imho i think is the right step for the 360 app and then updating later, remember that this is the first step for the app on the 360 and it takes time to develop and improve. the plex team have done well in providing a service for the 360. lets see how future developments go in the future for the app.

720p at 4mb is just awful.

For me this app is not usable until there will be a higher default selection...

10/100 & G should be plenty for streams though. You don't need full gigabit unless you're pushing insanely huge rips over your network.

Yes, and some (quite a few, actually) have insanely huge rips.

"I have the same question, is this intended behaviour?"

Yes, that is intended behavior for Plex app to default to 4mb 720p. We are looking into giving users ability to change default quality in the app for future releases.

in what way is it awful? blocky vid? poor audio? what?

tbh i think its ok and thats watching it on a 4k TV but tbh as long as i have ripped the blu-ray/dvd properly and its not out of sync i am happy, hell 3D movies work fine (SBS 3d vids) also i dont mind the manual change of the video quality for now till we get the option to change the default in the future.

as i mentioned before, you best keep with 15Mbps max and everything should be fine

It’s really not a big deal the way it’s set up for now.

Every time a video starts you already have the option on the screen to change the video quality so it’s not like it’s really any extra work.

But yeah, I do want a default setting eventually to be implemented. But until then fantastic job on the app, Hats off to the PLEX Team!
