Quality Settings are not accurate

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but the quality settings in Plex are not accurate on the Xbox 360.

When I select 10Mbps as the quality for my stream the video is not transcoded at 10Mb. I know it is not being transcoded at 10Mbps because when I go to the temporary folder where the transcoded video is being saved and I pull the info of the clips using Media Info I can see they are only 1280 * 720 at 4mbps.

I have tried selecting 8Mbps 10Mbps 20Mbps and the video is always transcoded at 1280 *720 at 4mbps.

So basically, no matter what quality setting I select on the Xbox app, the transcode is always 1280*720 4mbps.

This doesn't happen on any of my other devices.

Anyone else run into this issue?

Is your source file above 4mbps? If it's not it I don't believe it will transcode "up" as there would be no benefit of doing so.

Sorry for the late response I hadn't checked this post in a while. Anyway, yea most of my content is higher than 4mbps. I have blu ray rips that are 30mbps and when I select 10mbps 1080p it always transcodes at 720p 4mbps. It does this with pretty much every file I have regardless of bitrate The only reason I know plex is transcoding them at 720p 4mpbs is because I pulled the metadata off the temporary transcoded files using Media Info.

Geekcroff can you or anyone else verify that plex is transcoding at the quality it says it is?

I really want to know if this is happening to anyone else because I've been experiencing this behavior for months now.

Did you check a number of the transcoded chunks?  The average bit rate for each chunk is going to vary based on what is going on in the chunk itself.

@J_McKee    Yes, I've checked a number of the transcoded chunks. The bitrate for each chuck varies slightly but it's always really close to 4Mbps regardless of what is going on in this scene.

Have you ever pulled the metadata off your transcoded files? It would be interesting to see if your files are being transcoded at the selected  bitrate.

Yes, and it appears to be working normally for me based on whatever video level I am force transcoding to.  The top mediainfo is forced down to 1.5@480p and bottom one is at 10@1080p.  The original file being a 12@1080p:

J_McKee    First off thanks for taking the time to post your test results. I am at work right now so I'll do some testing and post my results when I get home later.

It's comforting to see that the quality setting are at least working for some people.

Ok, so I did some tests and I found something interesting. Plex is no longer trancoding to only 4@720P but it's still acting funky . The two screenshots on the top I forced down to 10@1080p. I noticed that plex is transcoding to a variable bitrate. The 11.3Mbps and 10.8 Mbps mediainfos are from fast moving scened and the 8376kbps and 7026kbps mediainfos were taken from slower moving scenes. This is totally normal and is expected from a variable bitrate setup, but why is plex transcoding to a variable bitrate? Also, the resolution is 1268*712 when it should be 1080p.

The mediainfo on the bottom was forced down to 1.5@480p but the bitrates are 1903kbps and 1783kbps and once again variable. Also, the resolution is 1264*712 when it should be 480P.

The original file is 29@1080p

I thought maybe I had an older version of the plex app so I deleted it off the xbox 360 and reinstalled it but I experienced the same behavior. Any ideas why this would be happening? Is there a way to troubleshoot this issue?
