Delay when playing a new CD

Server Version#:1.40.1.8227
Player Version#:Desktop app
I recently moved my PMS from an old Windows10 PC to a NUC11. (PAHi7 Panther Canyon mini PC 32 GB ram) The Windows PC is 11 years old. (XPS i7 3.5 GHz, 16 GB ram) My media library was an 8TB WD external drive. I replaced it with a WD 12TB external drive. I did a fresh install of Plex. (no backup)

The NUC11 plays movies very well. No issues.
When playing music, there is a 20 second delay before starting a new CD. There is not a delay when playing a different song from the same CD. This is happening on my home network. (not an internet issue) This is happening all on my devices.
I noticed the HD is processing /making noise more frequently now.
I did not have this issue with the old setup. My sweet fades on Plexamp aren’t as sweet either.
What can I do to correct this?

Without logs is difficult to pinpoint whats going on. As far as how long it takes to start a CD that could be a few things. I can’t guess on that.

My best guess for sweet fades would be that Sonic Analysis hasn’t been completed on all your music yet. My next best guess, in between songs if there is a gap or a pause and there are no sweet fades. You might be chromecasting? Chromecast is not always gap less. If you are streaming to android tv device over chromecast then you won’t be getting any sweet fades. This is a chromecast thing.

Fixing this situation, I am not sure. Wait for sonic analysis to complete and try streaming to something other than chromecast. Try streaming from a plexamp to another plexamp to see if sweet fades behave the way expect.

Sweet Fades don’t use Sonic analysis, but only Loudness analysis.

Which log do we need?

Could it be the new external HD is exFAT vs the old HD was NTFS?

Unlikely.

External hard drives tend to ignore the power policies of Windows, and are aggressively spinning down their platters. This is a more likely reason why the first access takes time subsequent files from the same folder do not (as they are quite likely already in the read cache by this time).

So should I convert it?

You’re right, the delay is not caused by the HD file system. I converted the drive to NTFS and the delay is still there on the first access.
Is there something else I could try?

As per my previous response: try a different hard drive. Preferably one which is not advertised as particularly power-saving.
Define a custom power policy, where you tell Windows to never spin down this drive (or at least only after a longer idle period – longer than one album playing time).

Do also disable the power saving setting of the Ethernet port.
Always use a wired network connection for Plex server (and media storage if a file server or NAS is used).
Disable the wireless adapter of the NUC. It doesn’t do any good to have both wired and wireless active.

This is probably the sound of the read/write heads getting parked/unparked, or the sound of the platters getting spun down and up more frequently.

Maybe you shuld try a different player software as well.
For music, Plexamp is probably more suitable and will certainly give more fluid transitions between tracks and albums.

The ethernet power setting was already off. I am using a wired connection. HD is USB 3 into NUC. (no NAS) I disabled the wireless adapter for the NUC. Tried it again, took 17 seconds to play the song using Plexamp player.

I tried to setup a new custom power policy for my external HD. Windows11 says “driver is unavailable” I don’t have any other options.

I switched the hard drive back to the original. The problem still exists. It takes about 15-17 seconds to start the first play on Plexamp on the my home network.

Is it possible that the network connection in Windows settings got reset to the default “public” classification? It must be “private”.

Did you change your router or updated its firmware recently? You might be affected by an issue with “DNS rebinding protection”. You migth want to disable this protection for hosts on the plex.direct domain. https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/

Network is set to Private. No changes to firmware on router. DNS rebinding protection is not enabled on router. Thank you for helping me. Could the issue be the NUC11PAHi7 is not powerful enough? Or something in Windows11 Pro?

Do you have a setting for it? If not, it could be still enabled.
