Deleted icons on some TV and video files - persist even after library scan

I have a few shows and movies that display a deleted icon on the movie or tv show poster even though the video files are available and can be played. See images.

For an example I have a TV show (Altered Carbon) which displays the deleted icon.

When I look at the TV show, it displays the icon only on Season 2.

But when I view Season 2 episodes, they are all available and playable.

Obviously this is a graphical error of some sort and could be ignored in this case, but the problem is that the next time I see the deleted icon on a TV show and ignore it thinking it is this error, but in reality it has been deleted.

Looking at similar threads to this I note that most comments say that the icon will disappear after the next library scan. I did a manual scan and the icons persist and there is nothing in the deleted folder. (Delete files after scan is not enabled.)

What are my next steps?

Thanks in advance.

As stated in the original post - no files are missing. This icon is only on the Show or Season poster. Please see images I included in my OP.

There is no “Get Info” when looking at those. So if the file is not missing, because it is not a file, it is a show poster, how do I remove these icons?

If I may augment here?

When there is a red trash can, one of two conditions exist:

  1. The parent directory (where PMS references) is missing

  2. The parent directory (where PMS references) does not allow user plex to proceed further . This is a permissions problem (Control Panel - Shared Folders)

The red trash can icon signifies that Plex is unable to find the file associated with that entry in your library.
You need to check that the file exists and that it has the proper permissions for user plex to read the file, remember DSM is Linux not Windows.

The file in question is a folder, and it is there and has the correct permissions, as far as I can tell.

You can find the folder path where Plex expects to find the file by moving the mouse over the poster and clicking on the pencil icon, then click on info (bottom left).

I see no Info button in the lower left

To remove the red trash can icon, go to plex Settings > Server > Library and enable Empty trash automatically after every scan and then scan the library in question, but be aware, this will also remove the entry from your Plex library and when you correct permissions or add the file again, it will be treated as a new entry in your library and may not use the old metadata etc.

How do I just “scan the library in question?” I only see a button that will re-scan the entire library.

If I am reading this paragraph correctly, you are saying that I need to remove the entire show to fix this issue (by emptying trash after each scan). Is that really the only way? To remove the show and re-add it?

This issue often occurs when your files reside on a USB drive and said drive is disconnected for any reason.

The item is not on a USB drive.

My point in my earlier post is that it is not a missing file, all files for each episode are online and playable. The icon only appears on one of the season folders and the Show folder. From what you are saying it seems that Plex thinks the folder is missing, yet it still acknowledges that the individual shows are online and valid.
But the show folder is there.
And the season folder is there.
And I think the permissions are correct.

Sorry, I’m not trying to be obtuse, it’s probable that I am misunderstanding you. I appreciate you taking the time to assist in this.

When there is a red trash can, one of two conditions exist:

  1. The parent directory (where PMS references) is missing

It seems to me that the parent directory is available.

  1. The parent directory (where PMS references) does not allow user plex to proceed further . This is a permissions problem (Control Panel - Shared Folders)

And these are the permissions it has.

Maybe something wrong in my settings?

Thank you for any assistance.

You can find the folder path where Plex expects to find the file by moving the mouse over the poster and clicking on the pencil icon, then click on info (bottom left).

This is what my TV Library looks like. Note the two tv shows with the trashcan icons.

I hover over the Altered Carbon show and click the pencil. Note that there is no info menu in the lower left.

Now I have clicked on the Altered Carbon Show. Note that the TV Show cover has the trash icon as well as Season Two poster

I click on the Pencil - there is an Info menu. I click that:

None of the shows are listed as missing. As can be seen here:

I then went to the library and clicked Scan Library Files

But there was no change in the TV Show Poster image.

Thanks, I was editing my post. But the shows are not missing.

I can’t get all the episodes in that screen shot, but you can see the episode posters do not have the trashcan icon.

In that case, you must click to enter the TV Show and then click on the pencil icon on any effected season as FeMaster eluded to.

Yes, I did that - and all the files are shown as available.

The plex dance did the trick.

Sorry for any misunderstandings.

Thank you.

I also experienced the trash can icon on a show and after further investigation I found that there was a duplicate file that resulted in the trash can icon appearing on the series thumbnail. I took the following steps to fix the issue:

Go to the episode in the series where you see the icon displaying the number of duplicate files. This is because both files have the same meta data:

TS

TS1

To fix this click on the 3 dots and select “Get Info” and it will show you both of the files listed for that episode (shown below)

Delete one of the files that is not needed. This fixed the issue for me and I no longer have the red trash bin icon on the series thumbnail poster.

Thanks for the re-encoding advise. In my case, when I deleted the duplicate file the trash can icon disappeared from the series poster thumbnail. I didn’t change any of the meta data for the files prior to deleting so not sure what else would have caused it to disappear. I did the same thing with another series hence my example.
