Player Version#: 4.69.1
my plex keeps creating a 2nd server (named for my laptop). the only server that should exist is the one i regularly use (western digital nas drive).
i follow the instructions to go to “settings” and “authorized devices” and delete the unwanted server, but it doesn’t actually go away. it still shows up under the little drop-down on the left of the screen as an option, it just now says “unclaimed server” when you select it and go to general settings.
so how then do i actually delete this server once and for all and have it not keep coming back?
i actually successfully removed it by the “authorized devices” panel at one point, and it stayed gone for several months, but for some reason it’s back and i just cannot remove it.
Thanks. When I search for programs to uninstall, i have two options, one just called “Plex” and another called “Plex media player”.
Do I remove one or both? I assume it won’t affect my ability to access my existing library through the web app, but don’t want to delete anything important.
None of this will affect accessing the Plex Media Server running on the WD NAS.
Plex is the Plex for Windows desktop client. When watching media on your PC, you should use it instead of Plex Web. It direct plays most audio/video formats, reducing the transcoding load on your server.
Plex Media Player, PMP, is the discontinued Windows client, replaced by the Plex for Windows client and the Plex HTPC client. PMP still works. You can use it or uninstall it if no longer needed.
Plex Media Server will show up as Plex Media Server in the list of installed programs.
If it is not listed, then let’s see if the files exist on the laptop.
The default installation location for Plex Media Server is
C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server ← 64-bit version
C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server ← 32-bit version
Do either of those locations exist on your laptop? If so, which one, and is there a Plex Media Server.exe file in the folder?
Note that C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex is the installation location for Plex for Windows client. We’re specifically looking for the ...\Plex\Plex Media Server folder.
I was able to find the subfolder “plex media server” under the 32 bit folder.
I have also located the plexmediaserver.exe file in this folder.
for some reason unknown to me, i do now have the “plex media server” showing up when i go to window’s uninstall options, so i should be able to handle it that way and test to see if it will disappear from the web client as well.
