Is this possible?
Forgive me if this is already in (I've yet to get home and upgrade), but is it possible to directly send video to AirPlay from the desktop? I know AP is "free" with iOS, but is it only limited to iTunes on Mac OS X?
There is limited support, but it is possible. Erica Sadun has put together a desktop app called AirFlick. It's not quite a seamless experience; for now you need to drag and drop links or videos into the app, and it doesn't quite support everything. But it does worm, and with a few hacks, you can stream a DVD wirelessly. But there are better apps in the App Store that receive streaming DVD playback.
If you wish to mirror your desktop or control your desktop via iOS there are some options. For AppleTV2, you are pretty much limited to using Exposed, a VNC client. Video playback will be quite choppy; this is no AirVideo replacement. For iOS, Splashtop remote desktop works wonderfully. It transmits sound and video in crisp lag-free quality, with impressive audio sync. The best solution for streaming your entire desktop to a TV is to hook up your iOS device to a TV via an official apple adapter and run Splashtop. I'm not sure whether or not Splashtop supports TV-out, but the jailbreak tweak Display Out will take care of that nicely.
Finally, rogueamoeba’s AirFoil is a final solution that also doesn't quite match up to AirVideo out. It can output audio to multiple AirPlay-enabled devices from any app on your desktop and has it's own video player that syncs the audio it sends out.
For the functionality that you want, you really should just pick up a wireless VGA or HDMI kit. They're around 80 bucks and work very well.
Here's AirFlicks website: http://ericasadun.com/ftp/AirPlay/
