Would be nice to have the ability to AirPlay to an AppleTV from means other than the iOS Application. e.g. from the web client, from android app, from the desktop application. I know it’s already implemented as an AirPlay direct from the server, so this seems like it wouldn’t be a huge leap to add. It would make using the AppleTV as a ‘client’ easier and wouldn’t require a household that had already paid into the “All Apple” mantra.
Thanks!
Agreed, would love this! Or maybe the server could have a built in client that could automatically airplay the UI, and of course your content when an aTV is on the network. That would be so posh!
Not sure where you got the idea that AirPlay is already built in to the server - this simply isn’t true  iOS clients can AirPlay from the server, but it’s the iOS software and the Apple TV doing all the work there - the media server is just responding to a HTTP request like it would for any other client.
Apologies for the misinformation...I got that from another thread (in iOS area I believe), that had shown server logs referring to AirPlay. The thread specifically said that the iOS device is *not* the middle-man throughout playback (e.g. you aren't draining battery life the whole time). I've no clue how you've implemented the software, and don't pretend to know...just interested in the feature :-). I'm no expert on AirPlay, but based on the existence of AirParrot, I'd guess there aren't insurmountable encryption/key-exchange problems to be overcome. If this is one of those DOA requests though, be sure and let me know...I'll spend my time and desires on something more attainable ;-)
Andrew
The IOS device doesn't stay in the middle for the traffic, but that doesn't mean that PMS is talking airplay talk to the ATV - it's just sending it's normal HTTP stream whist "airplay" sits above the IOS and ATV devices waving its magic wand around. :)
Actually, the iOS device doesn’t stay in the middle - it initiates the connection, but after that, traffic flows directly from the server to the ATV.
Maybe an option to always AirPlay (persistent across sessions)?
oops, that is what i meant, typo fixed :)
It would be a lovely stuff. I currently use some python script to emulate this featurebut it doesn’t work always and sometimes puts client into non responsive status
+1!
Love this feature in XBMC and Boxee!
+1
+1!!!
This would be a lovely add-on for plex or plex/web!! +1 for me!
You guys should look at AirPlayer, which turns Plex into an AirPlay destination. There is a thread here to implement it into Plex, or on their website, they have their own app, where every time you send out an airplay signal, it will open a new window and play.
I am a bit confused by the starting post. If this is for turning PMC into an Airplay destination (both audio and video), I am all for it (and alter the starting post to make that clear!).
Apologies for anything unclear in my original feature request. Specifically, what I was asking for, was the ability to AirPlay PMS content to an AirPlay destination (AppleTV being the main culprit, but I recognize there are others). I can already do that with my iOS device, but the ATV is a fairly powerful little set-top-box that would be great for Plex, if only you could get content ONTO it. While it’s easy for me at present, it’s nigh impossible for someone who hasn’t bought into the “All Apple” mantra in their home. For instance, it would be worthless if my wife didn’t have an iOS device that she could use without me present.
So the request, is for the ability from other devices (or the web client) to initiate an AirPlay transfer of the transcoded content FROM a PMS TO an AppleTV. As discussed earlier in the thread, today, the iOS application ‘kicks off’ the AirPlay session between PMS and ATV, and then the video is streamed directly. So, the main feature implementation point here, is getting another device (or web client) to ‘kick off’ that transfer. Other applications/services have done this, so it seems like at least a plausible feature (not that that means it’ll actually get any traction).
Hope this clears it up!
EDIT: Not to say the converse (PMC AirPlay Destination) wouldn’t be cool as well, just wasn’t what I was specifically asking for (I believe there are a few threads for that on here already).
Or list Apple TV as a Plex player in PMC and let the PMS handle all the AirPlay stuff with 1080p and multichannel audio (like Beamer app on mac) :)
I f@&$ing love that idea :D
Okay, now that I have a better picture here is what I think:
It sounds like all you want is for content to be streamed from PMS to an ATV, with one of the available Plex Clients playing the role of the remote. But that would also mean you are going to lack any UI elements on the ATV screen, they would have to remain on the Plex Client. The current implementation of the remote feature on the Plex iOS client does for example allow you to initiate playback on your PMC (soon to be PHT), but once it does, there is no information about what is currently playing nor it’s current state (i.e. paused, how far along you are, …), all of the overly is handled by PMC/PHT. Adding that sort of overlay to the transcoded stream from PMS does not sound like the right place to do that. Though I would really like to see that functionality being added to the remote control functionality of any Plex client, I still find the resulting lack of an overlay on the ATV not very compelling.
So my conclusion would be to follow tochsten’s idea and to make sure I interpreted it correctly I’ll put it into my own words:
Have a persistent setting somewhere in PHT that allows you to specify an Airplay target in addition to the machines monitor. Whenever PHT is running with that setting set it will airplay the screens content to the selected ATV. That way you could use the input devices connected to PHT to control what is going on or even use one of the other Plex clients as a remote and you would have all of PHT’s overlay present at your ATV. Sort of like Airfoil for video directly integrated into Plex. Of course this would mean that you require a machine capable of running PHT (could be the same one running PMS).
please don’t forget audio only.
i would love to send music from the pms directly to airport express stations.
