I'm very interested in Plex for the Xbox One, because it would serve as a great all-in-one Bluray player and media streaming device (without a glacially slow interface like every Bluray player I've ever used). One of the handful of things** stopping it from being perfect is the lack of Plex Companion so that I can fling media to it with my phone. Will Plex Companion ever be supported? Perhaps more importantly, is it even possible within the constraints imposed by Microsoft?
If it's simply not possible, and thus won't ever be supported, I will probably look for another device, eg. Rasplex with a standalone Bluray player, or perhaps an HTPC with a Bluray drive.
**Direct Play for MKV and, of course, support for more than just videos. I know the former is not currently possible, and the latter is in development.
I'm likely comparing apples to oranges here, however the Android Netflix app is able to playback on the Xbox One the same way it does for a Chromecast, so I believe a mechanism exists.
I'm fairly sure it's possible. My twit.tv app on Windows 8 can fling content to the media player app on the Xbox One, and of course Smartglass can also interact with the Xbox One. I therefore see no reason why the plex guys cannot get this essential feature working for the Xbox One app. It's the one main missing feature that's stopping me using the app on my Xbox One so far.
Aswell as Netflix (as mentioned above) you can do this with You Tube so it’s definitely possible to cast media to 3rd party apps on the Xbone, which suggests there is no restriction from Microsofts end.
I’m not a developer and have no idea if there is anything with plex that would stop it being possible but I certainly hope not and that we see this in the best future.
I'll add my +1 to this. I use the Xbox One app pretty much exclusively now, and casting media from the Android app is the one feature I miss most, especially since the layout and search function of the Android app has gotten so good. It's definitely preferable to using a controller or a remote to browse through the Xbox app.
Install Media Browser 3 on your Plex Server and use the combination of both programs.
MB3 does many things better than Plex including the ability to cast to most UPnP and DLNA devices including the xBox One. I'm doing this more and more myself as MB3 support Live TV.
+1 to adding Plex Companion support to the Xbox One as a playback/receiver device. I have a Windows Tablet with the Plex app on, would be great to browse with that on the sofa and then play the videos on my TV.
