Did the max number of entries in On Deck suddenly change to 8?
I’m not exactly sure when, sometime in the last week, it appears as if my On Deck is now restricted to only 8 entries instead of the 20 that it was doing before. If I watch a new show, the 8th entry gets bumped off the list.
I believe the number that are shown is client specific. I know I see a different amount depending on which of the 5 different clients I have that I am using at a given time.
It shouldn’t be. The max number is supposed to be 20 according to the patch notes from a couple of patches ago. And the web client certainly showed more than 8 a week ago.
Actually there are two ways that clients can access “On Deck.”
One is the old way which has a large number that I know is at least 75-100.
The other, newer, way of accessing “On Deck” seems to be limited to 40.
At least I have 40 “On Deck” items on my Rokus in the newest player which uses the new method and 78 in RARflix on the same Rokus and RARflix uses the older access method.
There are things that can go wrong with the pointers in both the database and the clients but those are the limits I have observed.
I would suggest a reboot of everything and, if that does not get things working try optimizing the database.
If those don’t get things back on keel then check back and maybe there are other things to try.
I just restarted everything and then did a optimize database. Still only 8 entries in On Deck. I had only 6 entries in there, but I found a couple of shows that weren’t in there and I marked the last episode I watched unwatched then watched again. It appears first in the list. When I tried to put a 9th entry in, however, the 9th one dropped off the list.

In the web interface in libraries turn advanced on. Then, what is your “Weeks to consider for On Deck” set at? I have mine set at “104” but you might want to try several settings and see if your “On Deck” changes.
It occurs to me that something might have happened to make Plex think that many of your shows that should be “On Deck” have not been watched within the window Plex is watching. That “could” be the setting for “Weeks to consider for On Deck” or it could be that Plex has flagged the shows wrong.
Mine is set to 52. However, I don’t think that’s the setting that matters, I can literally mark the most recent watched episode of 20 different shows as unwatched then watched (thereby tricking Plex into thinking they were all watched today) and the 8 entries in the On Deck list will cycle through, only showing the 8 most recently “watched” entries. It’s like something in the server broke entirely and it is purposefully limiting it to 8 entries.
You might want to try rolling back to an earlier version of the server. You could be right about the cause but if there were a general problem with the server then there should be a LOT more reports of the problem.
I think there might be something wrong in your system but what it could be is not clear. You might want to post your logs. I know a bit about what Plex does and a little about the why but I know little about the internal workings. There are others that might be able to suggest other possible causes or actions to take to fix the problem.
I managed to fix it. But it’s weird. I changed the number of weeks from 52 to 51 then changed them back. Now more than 8 will appear in the list again.

The number or the pointer to it probably got corrupted in the database and changing it forced a rewrite of the data which corrected the problem. (Or someone is messing with you and now is trying VERY hard to suppress their laughter so you won’t catch on.)
Or it could be divine intervention. You haven’t done anything lately that would anger the Plex Deities, have you? Even one of the lessor demons could have temporarily corrupted a small part of the database to avenge some minor transgression. The Plex demons (both lesser and greater) are kind of like wizards in many books and RPGs they are subtle and quick to anger and more to be avoided than confronted.
