Difference between metadata folder and media folder in the Plex installation directory?

So there’s two folders in the Plex installation directory that seem to have much of the same thing and I’m just curious if they do the same thing.

One is the metadata folder and the other is the media folder, both look like they house very similar files. I’m wondering because I was thinking about putting the metadata folder onto an SSD and then symlinking it back into the Plex Media Server folder but I was wondering if the media folder should be put there as well.

Copy everything in the application data directory and then change “The path where local application data is stored” via server settings.
Settings> Server> General> Show Advanced

Scroll down to “Relocate your Plex Media Server Data Directory” in the following support article.

Salve, avrei bisogno di aiuto. Pur leggendo più volte le guide segnalate non riesco a capire come cambiare la directory, mi potreste aiutare?
Grazie mille

I know this is an old thread but the original question was never answered and I’m curious as well. What exactly is the “Media” directory used for other than thumbnail previews?

Please, what’s the difference between Media and Metadata folder in appdata/local/plex media server/ ? What media are we talkning about? Pics?

Under the “Plex Media Server” directory, there is a “Metadata” and “Media” folder. In my case, the Media folder is ~2GB and the Metadata ~10GB.

The question being asked here is regarding the difference between the two. What gets stored in each respective directory, what is the contents of each used for etc.
