My /media folder has gotten too large due to video preview thumbnails. What is the best way to go about moving this folder to a new drive? I’ve seen posts about a symbolic link, but they were fairly old posts…is this still the best way to go about this?
Also, by moving this folder, even if the new drive is still an SSD, will I see a decrease in performance pertaining to loading metadata/posters/video preview thumbnails?
Sorry, it’s a bit confusing. In the /Plex Media Server/ folder I have both a Media folder and a Metadata folder. The Media folder is weirdly named since it isn’t where any media is stored. All I know is that that folder is where the Video Preview Thumbnails go, and those are what’s starting to take up a lot of space. So I specifically want to move that one (although I wouldn’t be opposed to moving the Metadata folder as well).
And I’m on a Linux Ubuntu setup, so the windows guide probably won’t help much.
Go the symlink option if using Linux. Windows can do symlinks, but it sucks at it and it isn’t reliable. I couldn’t see any reason that your performance would suffer, especially if it’s on a SSD.
The Media folder is where Plex saves info related to your specific file, like subtitles and the video previews.
The metadata folder is where Plex saves info related to the movie, like posters.
If you are going to move these files, it’s best to move the entire Plex Media Server folder, then you only need 1 symlink. and you won’t have to remember what’s been moved or not.
